IDEAS FOR HOME AND SCHOOL
KidKit ~~ Here are hands-on activities to enhance communication opportunities for children with autism and language delays. These materials can help provide structure and predictability and assist with beginning reading skills. FloorTime ~~ Stanley Greenspan's model for teaching mutual attention, play skills, and exploration when working with children with autistic spectrum disorders. This is an on-line information booklet. Toilet Training ~~ At Last!! ~~Applying Structured Teaching Principles to Toilet Training -- Many children with autism are difficult to toilet train. Parents and teachers have tried many approaches to teaching these children to use the toilet independently. Not all children respond to the same teaching techniques. This article is based on the compilation of several experienced teachers and consultants. Communication Incentives ~~Listed at this TEACCH site is a collection of suggestions for setting up communicative enticements that are meaningful and motivating to the child. Many involve play. Some involve problem-solving situations. All involve good timing, especially "waiting", on the part of the adult who sets up the situation and responds to the child's communicative attempts. Building Communication Through Routines ~~ This information by Susan Boswell of Division:TEACCH has suggestions for building communication around routines. It has terrific ideas for both school and home.

Beyond Autism ~~ This site is a "must see" for anyone interested in autism. It is packed with resources for parents and educators and created by a parent. It has a wealth of information! Come Back Jack ~~The goals of the Jack Parish Foundation are to provide funding, information, and awareness in the area of autism. The foundation has a variety of projects of interest to both parents and educators. Available at this site is the video, "Come Back Jack," which is a documentary telling the story of how the Parish family has responded to their son's diagnosis of autism. GFCF Diet ~~ Many parents have found the gluten and casein free diet helpful to their children with autistic spectrum disorders. This page will give you information, suggestions, and even a message board to exchange information with others on the

Linda Hodgdon's book, Visual Strategies

It includes sample schedules for work and home activities. The book is filled with ideas. This is an excellent resource -- and one of my favorites.

A Developmental Approach to Autism ~~ This page focuses on a developmental approach to working with children diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorders, pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), PDD-NOS and Asperger's syndrome. UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute ~~The focus of the M.I.N.D. Institute is to help those with neurodevelopmental disorders live active and healthy lives. The University of California, Davis, Health System has established a unique interdisciplinary setting to conduct research and provide clinical programs focused on these disorders. The Institute focuses on neurodevelopmental disorders in children and adults. The Autism Link Page ~~This page contains a compilation of links to autism-related sites all over the world. Every link contains a short description of the linked site. Spectrum Center ~~ This is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the educational and behavioral performance of students. The Spectrum Center provides numerous services to students with a variety of disabilities including Autism, ADHD, and SED. FEAT~~A non-profit organization of parents, educators, and other professionals dedicated to providing world class Education, Advocacy, and Support for the Northern California Autism Community.
