Birdee Pruitt: Birdee (not spelled Birdie like some dumb news reporters spell it in the reviews) is mother to Bernice and the wife of Bill. She is a sweet and good-willed person but has a problem with drinking and public displays when she goes into a depression-stage. She feels betrayed when her husband cheats on her, in which she is humilated on public television for it, so she leaves with her daughter to return to her hometown (Smithvile, TX) and to her mother (Ramona Calvert). In the end she falls in love (again) with high school friend Justin Matisse.

Justin Matisse: He is an old friend of Birdee's who has had a crush on her since high school. He is delighted when she returns back to Smithville. Although he dislikes her hard drinking and persistent insecurities (during her slight depression stage - which he sorta cures for her), he still doesn't waste time trying to get her love in return. He is a hard-working carpenter in which he wows Birdee when he shows her the craftsman's dream house he has designed and built with his bare hands - and which he would like to share with her (and Bernice) one day.

Bernice Pruitt: She is Birdee's sweet and adorable daughter who is 9-years-old. She is somewhat awkward and intensely sensitive. Her heartbreakingly open face is somewhat disguised by thick, coke bottle bottem glasses. She is torn between her parents due to their sudden breakup and bonds with her grandmother and young cousin, Travis. She resents moving to her new town and dislikes school at first due to her classmates' nickname for her, "Pop Eye." Bernice bitterly blames Birdee for their family's breakup - but after she sees her dad's true colors, she is able to exorcise the past and embrace her new life and family.

Ramona Calvert: Birdee's eccentric mother who cares deeply (even thought "it is hard for her to show it") about her daughter and her well-being. She tries to hook her up with Justin but at first Birdee doesn't like it, but in the end she is greatful. She is an achiever and wants her daughter too, to not give up and keeping going on in life, because it most likely will get better.

Travis (Calvert?): He is Birdee's 8 year-old nephew. He is the lonesome type and is a good mimic too. He looks up to Birdee a great deal and copies her a lot. He becomes good friends with his cousin Bernice, whom he relates to in some ways (because of the situation with his mother in CA and Bernice's father sorta out of the picture).

Bill Pruit: Birdee's jerky (and let me repeat myself again, JERKY!!!!!) husband. Although Bill could be seen as the antagonist, Micheal Pare (the man who plays him in the film) doesn't look at it that way. "My question when I first looked at the role was, 'Am I supposed to be a terrible guy who drops his wife for her best friend?' But the more I probed, the more it appeared that Bill was a victim of love. He is guilty of falling in love; he didn't want to happen, it just did."
