LESSON TWO
INDIAN CENSUSES, REGISTERS AND ROLLS

Most treaties required some type of payment, settlement or annuity. Before these payments could be made it was necessary to determine the persons entitled to receive the money or annuity. Some of these censuses or rolls contain a wealth of information, while others are head of family only (similar to the early U.S. Federal census). Remember that these are Indian census and rolls and whites are not counted.

The census listed below were taken by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and copies can be found at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., at the Federal Archives Branch in Chicago, IL and at some larger libraries. The film numbers for ordering at a Family History Center of the LDS Church have been included when available.

1849 Annuity Roll, mixed Menominee Indians of Wisconsin -- Transcription of the original annuity roll on which are recorded the names of the mixed-blood Menominees receiving payments on July 9th and 10th, 1948, under the provisions of the treaty of Octber 18, 1848. [LDS film #0928522 item 5]
