Internet meeting places for Fans (message boards, mailing lists, etc.)

Also be sure to check out the home pages of other fans - some of them have guestbooks you can sign or message boards that you can talk to other fans on.

chat transcripts

  • Transcripts of Rhino Records' Web Chat with Peter Tork on 12/20/96 (there were 2 chat rooms to hold all the people, so there are 2 transcripts available for downloading).

  • Transcript of chat with Micky & his daughters on August 17, 1997.

Chat rooms

Since the Monkees chat rooms on IRC have almost all either faded away from lack of use or been taken over by psychos, I have decided to discontinue the IRC chat section of this page.  There used to be some web based chat rooms out there on the fan pages, but I seem to recall that a few months ago there was some sort of moratorium declared and most of the fan web chats were voluntarily discontinued by their owners because certain unscrupulous people were using them to pass ugly rumors around or something.

Some of the fan pages may now have message boards in place of the chat rooms.  I will attempt to look into this further.  You may also want to look for sites with guest books as that can also be a good way to meet fellow fans.

Forums

  • America Online message boards - you must be using the built-in AOL web browser to use these links.

  • Delphi has several online communities devoted to the Monkees and their fans.  These include Micky Dolenz Fans , The Monkees Online Fan Club Forum , The Mike Nesmith Forum , and The Monkee Lovers Forum .  You can do a search from the Delphi home page for forums related to The Monkees or any other subject you may be interested in.  These forums or communities can consist of any or all of the following:   web page, message board, chat room. The service is free, but you do need to register and pick a password in order to use the message boards and chat rooms.

  • Yahoo! Clubs - The Yahoo! search engine now also has interest forums or clubs similar to the Delphi forums described above.  You have to create an account to use these services, but this is free.  Users over age 13 may also create a member profile and add it to the user directory. Each account may have up to 5 user profiles attached to it, so you can have one profile for each family member or one person can have different profiles for different interests.  Users may create either a publicly listed club which anyone may join or a private unlisted club which others may join only by invitation.  Message boards are not threaded by subject, which can be annoying if there's a lot of traffic.

The most active of the Monkees clubs on Yahoo seem to be:

There are a lot of other clubs but the activity level and number of members vary quite a bit (here's the search results for "Monkees").  I found it helpful to set up a customized portal page at my.yahoo.com to make it easier to see which clubs have had messages posted recently.

Mailing Lists

  • The Monkees Music Mailing List - a partial description from the web page:  "The Monkees Music Mailing List is an unmoderated discussion list centered around the Monkees. Some of the topics discussed on the list include: the Monkees as a band, the individual members of the Monkees, the Monkees' music, "The Monkees" TV show, and basically anything and everything else pertaining to the Monkees! Members are encouraged to actively participate in the polls and threads, and may also post their reviews and fan fiction or anything else that they deem appropriate."

  • Egroups.com - (Formerly OneList.com) Probably the best way to find Monkees related mailing lists is to visit this site and search by keyword for "Monkees" or the guys' names.  Subscription to a list is a fairly easy process and gives you a choice of recieving the regular mailing list, a digest version, or reading the messages on the web site instead of having them emailed to you.

Usenet Group

  • The alt.music.monkees usenet newsgroup - Once advertised as "The Friendliest Place In Cyberspace," this used to be both a great place to find information and a fun place to meet fellow fans.  Unfortunately, since the middle of 1996/97, it has degenerated into just another typical Usenet newgroup full of flamers, newbie-haters, fan-bashers and general all-around bullies.  If you want to know how much that old album you found is worth, or how you can get tickets to a particular show, this might still be a useful place to look.  If you want to make friends and meet other fans though, you'd probably be better off looking into the guestbooks on fans' homepages or one of the message boards in the Forums section.
