The Setup | Episode Summaries | Reviews | Images

January 22 - Juntos (Together)
The main story was Alex's title fight. Other stories were Miguel's return and Bibi fighting for her shop.

Yolanda had little to do other than watch the fight and root for Alex.

January 15 - Un Pacto Con El Diablo (A Pact With the Devil)
The main story was Alex getting his title shot. The other story was Bibi getting some help from Paulie to try to keep her shop open.

Yolanda finds herself desperate for money to pay tuition at law school, so she asks Mrs. Ridley for more hours. She said no. So she to Joseph's apartment for some sympathy and loving. He suggested that perhaps her problems meant that she wasn't meant for law school after all. She didn't like that. Roberto was more optimistic, saying he would help. But the real salvation came from where Yolanda didn't want it to - Karen. She agreed to take Yolanda on at a full-time salary with part-time hours as her personal assistant. She had no choice, really, but to accept.

January 8 - La Visita (The Visit)
The main story was a surprise visit from Roberto's in-laws. Other stories included Alex trying to deal with the death of his friend, Bibi's nervous feelings about potentially losing her shop, Roberto juggling his women around, and Rosa's bracelet.

Yolanda and Joseph made goo-goo eyes at each other. Somewhere in there he dropped off his CD.

January 1 - Lagrimas en el Cielo (Tears in Heaven)
The main story was Alex's friend James having an aneurysm caused (indirectly?) by a blow to the head during some heated sparring with Alex. This opens up guilty feelings for Alex, a reunion for Roberto and Alex, and Miguel's firing. Other stories included Carlos losing track of Adam.

In this episode Yolanda tried calling Peter and waiting for his call, but they never came. She talks to her father, who tells her that perhaps she should move on. She meets a hunky musician named Joseph Marques and they bat goo-goo eyes at each other.

December 18 - No Te Muevas (Don't You Move)
The main story was Roberto and his relationship with loves past and present - Julia, Cynthia, and Bibi. Other stories included Carlos falling for an artist who happens to be a single mother, and Alex getting into a sticky situation.

When Alex found out that he was being set up and hustled for money by some no-good hustling opportunist and his shyster lawyer friend, he called Yolanda for help. She reluctantly did so because she didn't like what Alex was up to since he left Casa Santiago. She was even more reluctant when she found that the person who was going to do the work was old nemeis Karen. Karen did a good job at exposing the weaknesses of the opposing case and even extracted a small payment for Alex's trouble, for which he was suitably grateful. Karen claimed Yolanda owed her.

December 11 - Las Manos de Piedra (Hands of Stone)
The major story was Carlos' surgery, and the search for money to pay for it that leads to Roberto assuming that Alex's manager had been cheating them. Other stories included Miguel moving in with Alex, Salvador getting busted, and Roberto bumping into an old flame.

Yolanda was called into a meeting with Karen and one of the partners at work about her conduct. She lost this confrontation too, and expressed to her father doubts about going to law school.

December 4 - Revelaciones (Revelations)
The major story was Carlos waking up paralyzed after his fight in Tijuana. Other stories included Victoria still making eyes for her teacher and Alex's new apartment.

Yolanda celebrated a favorable settlement at the law firm she worked at. Karen, a lawyer at the firm, appreciated Yolanda's hard work on the case and offered to help her. But Yolanda discovered that there was an important piece of evidence left out of discovery, which made her suspicious. Karen subtly reminded her about the rules of the law game - basically, whatever gets done at whatever cost, and never mind scruples. Yolanda didn't agree.

September 11 - Comenzado de Nuevo (New Beginning)
The major story was Carlos being so desperate for a fight that he goes to Tijuana. Other stories included Alex finally getting his fill of Roberto, and Victoria making goo-goo eyes for the substitute teacher.

Again, Yolanda had little to do. She listened sympathetically as Bibi told her troubles at the shop and her desire to see Tommy in Boston.

September 4 - Aniversario (Anniversary)
The major story was the first anniversary of Teresa's death. Other stories included Alex & Toni doing the usual, Carlos confronting The Rock, Roberto and Bibi sharing old times, and Victoria showing off her surly side.

Another episode with not much from Yolanda. She helped plan the anniversary ceremony.

August 28 - Hermanos (Brothers)
The major story was Ruben leaving home to help an old friend. Other stories included Salvador and Miguel fixing the steam room at the gym, and Alex letting his girlfriend Toni mess with his head.

Yolanda didn't do much this episode besides worry about Ruben's disappearance, and hissing at Alex for disappearing (double standard?).

August 21 - Mascaras (Masks)
The main story was Victoria trying to help her new friend Suki. The other story was Alex meeting a girl that distracts him from his next fight.

Yolanda was the one to bail Victoria out of jail. She wasn't happy about it, and told her little sister so. She also warned her to stay away from Suki. Victoria didn't listen, of course. Later on she gave her some pamphlets and information about a place where Suki could go to get taken care of.

Oh yes, there was this one throwaway scene with Yolanda, Victoria, and Carlos in the kitchen.

August 14 - Cholitas
The stories included Carlos training to get back into the ring, Roberto & Cynthia's continued flirtations, Tommy's internship, and Victoria's "friends" leading her into trouble again.

As for Yolanda, she got some hired help around the house, funded by Aaron Cross. He continued to seduce her, and she continued to rebuff him. Eventually she got what she wanted - his interview, and him off her case.

August 7 - Luchando (Fighting)
The stories included Carlos' continued harassment by Ed the rogue cop, until he stumbles on a solution; Roberto continuing to seduce Cynthia the bakery girl; Miguel, Alex, and Roberto's tiff over a magazine shoot; Bibi's confrontation over Tommy's marijuana use; and a homeless stray that hangs around the gym looking for work.

Yolanda was sent by the firm to the Paramount set interview surly actor Aaron Cross. He treats her rudely and she blows up at him. One of the partners calls her in and says, unexpectedly, that he enjoyed the time they spent together and wants to deal with her exclusively. Back on the set, Aaron tries to seduce her with champagne and piano playing. She didn't fall for it. Later she is serenaded at home by a mariachi band. The rest of her family was more impressed than she was.

July 31 - Dos Padres (Two Fathers)
The stories included Roberto meeting a nice single mother in the local panadería, Miguel arranging an interview for Alex, and the frustrations and self-destruction of Paco.

It was a slow week for Yolanda. She took the day off from work, and also her "job" of serving the male Santiagos. She also got a chance to talk with Bibi.

July 24 - Negro y Moreno (Black and Brown)
The main story was Alex's fight against a top-ranked contender, his new trainer, and the effect it all has on the family. Other stories included Paco's struggle to stay on the good side of the law, and Carlos' search for trouble finally finds a taker.

Yolanda had a busy week. She gossiped with Bibi about Peter's prowess in bed, but then Peter dropped a bombshell on her - he wanted to transfer to London and wanted her to come with him. She decided not to go because she wanted to get her law degree. Is this the end of Peter? Possibly, but I hope not. Nestor and Ruth are good together.

In between the Peter thing Paco went to Yolanda office and confessed his problem (he punched his boss) and his need to keep his probation officer from finding out. She took the law quite literally into her own hands, confronting the guy at the restaurant and spouting legal-beagle talk like health inspections and under-the-table payments. She got him to back down.

July 17 - Regreso de Paco (Paco's Return)
The main story was the release of Paco from prison and its effects on the Santiagos and Bibi. Other stories included the fight to promote Alex's career, and the relationship of Alex and Nicole.

Yolanda was late to appear and left early. She greeted Paco, told the family about getting accepted into USC's law school, and had a dinner hosted in her honor. That was about it.

July 10 - El Baile (The Dance)
The stories included Carlos heading on his downward spiral, and Alex considering a new promoter.

Yolanda worried that her sexual inexperience would lead to unhappiness between her and Peter. So Bibi helped her get in touch with that side of her - including a trip to a sex shop. The results were, um, quite satisfactory.

July 3 - Sueños (Dreams)
The main story was Victoria being haunted by the death of Jaime from all sides. Other stories included Alex's rise into stardom and Carlos' descent into drink.

Yolanda had a story of her own. She and Peter made light conversation and tried to steal kisses, but they kept getting interrupted. Finally, when everyone had left, they got into some serious necking. Peter had passed second base and was heading for third when Yolanda put the stop sign out. To his credit, he did stop. Most of the rest of the episode consisted of one party apologizing to the other, and both agreeing to slow things down for now.

June 26 - Pilot
The main story was Carlos' climb to the top, and tragic fall at the hands of a family enemy. Other stories included Alex taking up the family boxing tradition, and Victoria hanging out with the bad boys and girls.

Our favorite character, Yolanda, met a nice attorney at work named Peter Terrano. He seemed interested, but she kept putting him off (family troubles, you know). She saw him dining with another woman and took her frustrations out on the family - especially her father Roberto. She told him how his deceased wife (and her mother) wasn't allowed to have a life and that the same thing was happening to her. They eventually made up, and she invited Peter to the climactic fight.

Ruth was good throughout, but I thought she was especially impressive throwing her hissy fit. I'd never seen that side of her before, which goes to show that she's like a diamond with many facets to surprise and delight me.
