In New England growing roses can be a "tough row to hoe". Someone once said that roses in New England look like black spot on a stick! I don't think it's that bad! They are a lot of work, the effort is worth every minute. Why Grow Roses?
Whenever someone asks me this question, I want to say, "Just look at them!" But I suppose that's not the way to be. I love the hobby because it gives me time away from work and allows me to create something beautiful, as well as spreading a lovely scent with every breeze. But there is more to it----------For me working with roses feels very spiritual. Roses are not for eating, they are for the soul. They add beauty, and joy to life, mine and those who see the blooms. With every bush you get soft, sometimes stunning beauty, with thorns. Isn't that what life is all about?
I enjoy it when folks, driving by the parsonage, stop to take a look, have a sniff or just talk with me about my avocation.
If you want to know more about growing roses yourself, Check out the links to my rose tips or the rose history pages. What follows are not examples of great poetry, but they offer my thoughts on growing roses in a neighborhood garden like mine.
My Neighbor's Roses
The roses red upon my neighbor's vine
Are owned by him, but are also mine.
His was the cost, and his the labor too,
But mine as well as his, enjoyed by two.
They bloom for me and are for me as fair
As for the one who gives them all his care.
Thus I am rich because a good man grew
A rose-clad bush for all his neighbors' view.
I know from this that others plant for me,
And what they own my joy may also be;
So why be selfish when so much that's fine
Is grown for you upon your neighbor's vine.

My Neighbor's Reply
Your neighbor, sir, whose roses you admire,
Is glad indeed to know that they inspire
Within your soul a feeling quite as fine
As felt by him who plants and tends that vine.
That the flowers bring my neighbors pleasure
Only increases mine by double measure.
It surely adds to their worth because I know
That others' are brought joy as the roses grow.
Friend, from my neighbors and this vine I've learned
That sharing pleasure means a profit turned;
And he who shares the joy in what he's grown
Spreads joy abroad and doubles his own.
