Colored Sand

Materials for each color:
1/2 cup clean, sifted sand
water
food coloring
bucket and sieve
Container with lid for each color
Newspaper

Instructions:
Sift and clean the sand. Use the sieve to sift fine grains of sand into a bucket. Wash the sand by pouring water into the bucket. Drain the water through the sieve. Dump the sand back into the bucket. Repeat until the water runs out clear.

Mix approx 1/4 water and several drops of food coloring in a jar until desired color is reached. Add the sand.

Stir the mixture, until sand is evenly colored.

Let sand sit in colored water for at least 15 minutes, then pour our the extra water using a sieve.

Spread sand out to dry on newspaper. Move it around from time to time so that it all can dry.

Repeat steps for each color

With the colored sand you can make sand paintings by mixing glue and water and spreading on a sheet of heavy paper with a drawing. Then adding sand.

Or make a layered sand jar.
spoon several layers of colored sand in a jar.

Crumbleproof Sand Castle

Materials Needed:
2 cups sand
1 cup cornstarch
1 cup water
newspaper

Instructions:
Mix sand, cornstarch, and water in an old pot.
Cook the mixture over low heat, stirring all the time.
When the mixture thickens, remove from stove and let it cool.
Turn it out on a newspaper. Mold into a castle or any shape.
