I made this sample slipper with different colors so that it would be easier to see the different parts of the pattern. Sole: orange; Sides of slipper: green; Around ankle: white; Top of foot: red

MATERIALS: Size I hook; approx. 1 oz any color 4 ply worsted weight yarn. Optional: a contrasting color can be used for the top of the foot.
SIZE: About a women's size 8 - 8 1/2 (Slipper fits snuggly)
DIRECTIONS:
SOLE:
With MC, ch 27.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (26 sc)
Note: Length of Row 1 was about 1 1/2" shorter than the length of my foot.
Row 2-10: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. (26)

SIDES OF SLIPPER:
Rnd 1: (3 sc in corner sp; sc 7 times across ends of Rows 1-10; 3 sc in corner sp; 24 sc in next 24 sts) 2 times; join to first sc of beg 3 sc. (74 sc)

Rnd 2-7: Sc in each sc around. Mark end of row with piece of yarn to help keep track of each row. (74)

Note: For Rnd 8-17 you will only be crocheting in the back part of the slipper that goes around your ankle/leg.
Rnd 8: Sc in next 23 sc; ch 7; sk 36 sc; sc in next 15 sc. (45 sts: 38 sc, 7 chs)
Rnd 8 seems to be the part of the pattern that is giving most people problems. If it seems that your slipper is lop-sided at this point then your stitch count for Rnds 1-7 is off. All you need to do is sc until you are about 18 sts from the middle front of the slipper... then follow the rest of the rnd (ch 7, sk 36 sc, then sc until you reach your starting point for the round). If it still seems lop-sided, tear out this rnd and adjust your sts as needed.

Rnd 9: Sc in each st around. (45)
Rnd 10: Dec 22 times, sc in next sc. (23 sc)

Rnd 11: Sc in each sc. (23)
Rnd 12: (Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 5 times; sc in next 3 sc. (28 sc)
Rnd 13: (Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 5 times; sc in next 3 sc. (33 sc)
Rnd 14-16: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 17: Ch 3; (sk 1 sc, hdc in next st, ch 1) 15 times; join to 2nd ch of beg ch-3, end off.

TOP OF FOOT:
At this point, slipper is done except for open area above toes. Position slipper so that this open area is on the left. Join yarn in the st before the first st of this open area (in Rnd 8); ch 3, dc in next 36 sc; dc (in Rnd 8) in the st after the last st of the open area. (38 dc)

Sl st in next 4 sts of Rnd 8, turn; dc in next 38 dc around; sl st down the side of the beg ch 3 (that you made when you joined yarn at open area at the top of the foot); sl st beg ch-3 to next 3 sts of Rnd 8; close opening above the foot by sl st the opposite dc together (19 times), end off.

Hide all loose end. Turn slipper inside out.

VARIATIONS:
This pattern can be adjusted to fit any size. The basic pattern is the same no matter what size you make. You begin by crocheting the rectangle that forms the sole....then you sc around it to make the sides of the slipper. Next you make the part covering your ankle. Lastly you cut and rejoin yarn to close the open area above the foot. It can be made with one or two colors.
I recommend that you try on the slipper as you make it to make sure it fits correctly. In general, your beginning rectangle should be a little shorter than the length of the foot. Since everyone's foot is a little different, you may have to add additional rounds to the sides of the foot or inc/dec the number of sts in some rows to get a good fit.
