Mission Statement: Support for People Accused of Abuse (SPAA) is an organization of men and women who understand the needs of those accused of domestic violence.  Through our own tragic experiences, we learned the value of mutual support after having been torn from our families and forced to make our way alone. We believe that whether “guilty as charged” or “not guilty” or something in between, people accused of abuse need and deserve help too. However, our collective experience looking for appropriate services led to disappointment, confusion and despair; and for some of us, arrest. Our mission is to help you get what you need, so you can avoid some of the mistakes we made and so you don’t have to navigate this treacherous path alone.

How do we operate? SPAA is a network of people who have been through the emotional upheaval of the restraining order process and who are willing to help others get the services they need.   We provide this site so you can link to resources, which will help you understand and better, managed the restraining order process.  If you would like to speak with someone directly please send us an email making that request.  If you are interested in starting a support group in your area, we will help you all we can.

We are an independent organization, and do not claim to satisfy the Department of Public Health’s requirement for “a batterer treatment program.” People come to SPAA because they want to. When we support each other’s efforts at understanding and correcting our abusive relationships it is because we feel “safe” enough to do this work.

What do we offer people?

Answers to legal questions and the new domestic violence laws.
An opportunity to meet other people going through similar problems.
Referrals to attorneys or therapists specializing in domestic issues.
Advice to avoid more legal problems such as violating restraining orders.
A chance to examine patterns of abuse without criticism.
Strategies to leave relationships peacefully.

We started our first group in Wakefield Massachusetts, but discontinued regular meetings when members moved on.  Some of our members went on to join men’s groups such as MensWork in Wakefield, Massachusetts.  Recently a new support group has formed and meets biweekly in Beverly Massachusetts. However this groups has elected to be an all male group.  If you are within commuting distance, please feel invited to attend.  Click on to Men's Rap Group for more details.

Our vision for the future sees support groups as ubiquitous as those for “female victims”, people helping people in an anonymous and safe environment to reexamine and make necessary changes in their lives following charges of domestic abuse. We encourage you to start your own SPAA and will help all we can. We have developed a “prototype” model for running meetings and supplying people with the resources they need. The business plan,  brochure,  meeting agendapress release and flyer can be down loaded from this web site. Let us know if you start your own group so we can link up and refer people to you. We believe this effort will contribute to rebuilding "safer" families for everyone. Drop us an email and let us know your opinion.
