Help Us Help Others

Introduction
The worldwide St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) is dedicated to serving the needs of the poor.  The St. James Conference is specifically dedicated to serving all people who need help and live within St. James Parish. The conference is made up entirely of volunteers from St. James and other parishes. The boundaries of the parish are -  north of Bell Road to the Maricopa County line and West of Interstate 17 to 51st Avenue.

The people of St. James are extremely generous. Through that generosity, we are able to provide help to about 600 families per year, with more than 1100 service calls. We average about  25-30 calls per week, with an increasing volume.

Mission
To help the needy within our parish boundaries regardless of their race, creed or religion.

Fulfilling Our Mission
Our primary activity is to provide food boxes to people who request them on our message phone.

We also provide vouchers that can be used at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift stores in the Phoenix area.  These stores carry furniture, appliances and clothing.

When people need financial help, we normally refer them to other organizations within the Phoenix area that are established to provide this type of help and get people back on their feet. We are not set up to provide financial assistance but on a critical need basis and within our available funds, we occasionally help people with partial rent and utility bills.

We operate totally on donations provided by St. James parishioners.  Father Ken has allowed us to have a special collection on the fourth Sunday of every month. Ten percent of the contributions are provided to the Phoenix St. Vincent de Paul organization in return for administrative, food support and other services that we use. Ninety percent of contributions go to serving the people within our parish boundaries. All labor is provided by volunteers from the parish.

Most of our food is provided from the SVdP warehouse in Phoenix as a monthly allotment of two or three food pallets. This food is currently provided free of charge. Perishable food is purchased by our conference.  All food is stored in the church pantry.
