Make a vase full of paper
sunflowers! Some of the
flowers in this masterpiece
pop out of the picture.

A painting of objects that do
not move is called a "Still Life".

If you'd like to print these
instructions, go to your File menu
and select Print.

What You'll Need:
Computer paint program, such as Kid Pix®
(or pattern from this page)
Crayons or markers
Scissors / Tape / Glue stick
Garbage bag twist ties

What To Do:

• At your computer, open a painting program such as Kid Pix®, ClarisWorks/Paint, or Windows Paint. Draw a simple flower vase in the center of your screen, towards the bottom.
  
  Here's one way to draw a vase. Use the shape tools in your tool box:
  
  1. Select the oval tool. Draw a medium-size oval in the center of your screen. Draw a smaller oval inside of it. Draw another small oval near to bottom of your screen, centered under the other ovals.
  
  2. Select the pencil tool. Draw a curvy line which connects the top oval to the bottom oval. Try to match this curve when you draw the other side of the vase. It's okay if it doesn't match.
  
  3. Draw a few (3 or 4) sunflowers. Make them in outlines, you'll color them later. Add a line that goes across the drawing, at about the center of the vase. This is the table top.
  
  4. To print: place 2 sheets of paper in your printer. Print one copy at 100%, or "Large Size". Print a second copy at 90%, or "Medium". (You may have to change print size in Page Setup, in the File menu.)
  
  Another option:
  Print the pattern that we made (make 2 copies, one at 100 % and one at 90%).
  
  
• Start with the smaller picture. Color the entire piece.
  
• From the second piece of art, which has larger flowers, cut out 2 flowers. Cut out the vase shape, trimming off the flower stems and back edge of the vase rim. Color these pieces.
  
• Apply glue to the back of the vase cut-out, on the sides and bottom only. Place the large vase over the smaller vase. Push the sides together to make the center of the vase bend out a little.
  
• Tape one end of a twist tie to the back of a flower cut-out. Slip the other end into the large vase and tape it down. Do this for each flower cut-out. Bend the twist ties to make the flowers pop out from the picture.
