How to Draw
a Face

It's easy to draw a face once you know a few tricks. Practice with this simple drawing then try making a picture of yourself. A picture of yourself is called a "Self Portrait".

If you'd like to print out these instructions, go to your File menu and select Print.

What You'll Need:
Computer paint program, such as Kid Pix
(or pattern from this page)

What To Do:

• At your computer, open a painting program such as Kid Pix, ClarisWorks/Paint, or Windows Paint. Draw a simple face following the steps below:
  
  1. Draw a large oval, as shown.
  
  2. Draw a straight line across the oval, dividing it in half.
  
  3. Draw a line which is half way between the line you drew in step 2 and the bottom of the oval.
  
  4. Draw a line which is half way between the line you drew in step 3 and the bottom of the oval.
  
  5. Draw a straight line going up and down, dividing the oval in half the long way.
  
  6. Add eyes, nose, and mouth in their correct place, as shown. Use the lines as guides.
  
  7. Add hair, ears, or any other details you'd like. Erase any guide lines that are showing.
  
• Once you've practiced on a simple face, try drawing one that looks like you. Look into a mirror and make the features on the face match your own. Look carefully at the shape of your face. It may not be shaped exactly oval. If it isn't oval, start your picture by drawing a face shape that is more like your own. If you draw your face in outlines, as we did, you can print a copy and color it with crayons. Try a version where you add color at your computer, too.
  
  Another option:
  Print the pattern that is provided. Add your features in the correct spaces.
