Coaching Inns, Sandbach

Sandbach had links to the outside world in the days of stage coaches and here are two hotels that were associated with them in the past.

The Wheatsheaf Hotel, Sandbach Fistly, there is The Wheatsheaf Hotel which can be found by walking from the Town Hall to the large roundabout. The coaching archway can be seen on the right of the picture and is used today as a small car park. The fine features of the building are shared next door with the National Westminster Bank.
A plaque on the front of the building, states

"THE WHEATSHEAF HOTEL.
BUILT IN 1890 FOR THE Rt.Hon. HUNGERFORD LORD CREWE BY JOHN BOWER (NANTWICH), THIS WAS A REGULAR COACHING STOP. "THE NETTLE" ON ITS DAILY MANCHESTER RUN CALLED HERE AND A SHUTTLE COACH MET ALL TRAINS ARRIVING AT SANDBACH RAILWAY STATION.
ERECTED JOINTLY BY SANDBACH'S HISTORY SOCIETY, ROTARY CLUB AND TOWN COUNCIL."



The George Hotel, Sandbach Walking from the direction of the Old Hall and St Mary's Church, The George Hotel can be seen at the top of the rise. It is the white building near to the centre of the picture and it's frontage faces into the Market Square.
A plaque on the front of the building, states

"THE GEORGE HOTEL.
ONE OF SANDBACH'S ORIGINAL COACHING INNS, PARTS OF THE BUILDING BEING 300 YEARS OLD. THE LONDON COACH "THE ROYAL SOVEREIGN" CALLED EVERY DAY AT 4PM SOUTHBOUND AND 8AM NEXT DAY RETURNING TO LIVERPOOL, AND "THE ROCKET" AT 6AM TO LIVERPOOL AND 11AM TO BIRMINGHAM.
ERECTED JOINTLY BY SANDBACH'S HISTORY SOCIETY, ROTARY CLUB AND TOWN COUNCIL"
