The promenade along the north shore of the River Clyde at West Clyde Street has recently been upgraded - it is possible to walk from the pier car park at Helensburgh along to Kidston Park and Rhu - it is a flat, easy walk and there are plenty of seats along the shore line to sit and watch the world go by!
The shops on West Clyde Street offer a variety of wares - from beautiful underwear at Cat's Pyjamas to handbags and luggage at Diane Marcel. Allan's Ironmongers stocks a wide range of household goods and gifts; The Wedding Planner (featured on television) sell amazing wedding gowns. Urie's China Shop is a must! - this is an old-fashioned emporium, stocking good quality china and glassware - in "quaint" surroundings!
Further along the street, the Edinburgh Woollen Mill sells sweaters and clothing; Scottish gifts and traditional Scottish home baking are the forte of MacGillivray's. MacLaren Books are renowned for the second-hand books with a nautical theme, though they have moved to James St.

Summer sails on the Clyde - it is possible to sail on various excursions down the Clyde - Kyles of Bute and the Narrows Cruise; Cruise to the Gareloch; The Two Islands Cruise and a Cruise to Loch Riddon or Loch Striven.
John Logie Baird was born in Helensburgh in 1888 in West Argyle Street. He installed the first electric lighting in Helensburgh in his own home! His genius was electrical engineering and in 1925 he was the first to televise a human face. |
