Below are a few "Frequently Asked Questions" about Intel's I.263 codec and the answers. If you have a question you don't see answered , click the pen and paper below and send me an e-mail.  I will answer as soon as possible.
What is a codec?

A codec is a method of "COmpression/DECompression" and is used to make large video files much smaller.

When attempting to play an .avi file the "Unexpected File Format " or a similar error message displays, what's wrong?

You are attempting to play a file for which the proper codec is not on your system. To correct the problem obtain the correct codec.  There are links at the bottom of this page to some of the more common codecs in use.  The CODISTL.exe codec is the one I use in my AVI files and is available for download from this site.  IV 3.2, 4.1, 4.3, and 5.* codecs are available from the Intel site.  Need the old vids IR2.1?  There is a link below that will take you to the "G" rated A.B.M.E. Newsgroup FAQ site (alt.binaries.multimedia erotica) homepage where you can find information on that as well as Pecks Power Joiner for joining AVI files and Pecks Power Post for posting as well as links to may other codecs and help with mulimedia files and newsgroups.

Where does the I.263 codec come from and is it available from the manufacturer on the Net?

The I.263 codec is an Intel codec and fairly new. It has outstanding compression and quality   and is becoming very popular however the codinstl.exe file available from Intel on their site is for their "Create And Share Camera Pack " and does not include the sound codec used in AVIs. They include the codec in their "Intel Capture Utility" program and encourage it's distribution with the files you create.  At this time they have no plans to make it available on their site. You only need to download and install this file once, after installed all I.263 AVI files should play with no problem.  After downloading, unzip the execution file and double click. If you don't have an unzipping program visit www.winzip.com and get one.

Will the I263 codec work on Windows 3.1?   What about a Mac?

I.263 was designed for the 32bit Windows operating system. It was also designed for the Pentium processor however it does appear to work on 486DX as well although the video plays choppy (like a slide show) as the codec is processor intensive.  I've been told that playing the video in the file properties/preview window is smoother than an AVI player window.      As for the Mac, only the newest high power Macs running Virtual PC can expect to see I263 video.

Will the I263 codec work on Windows NT?

With the codec stripped of the installation program it will work on NT 3.51 and above including Windows 2000 (NT 5) and Windows XP. A zip file has been created containing the codecs and manual installation instructions. To set up Intel  I263 & I420  CODEC's under NT  you will need to do the do the following:  Copy these files to the WINNT\SYSTEM32 Subdirectory :    i263_32.drv     and     cm32.acm  These files are the VIDEO CODEC and the AUDIO CODEC.  Then  merge the VIDCI263.reg into the NT registry by double clicking it. You will need to make one change to install on NT 3.51Just follow the instructions in the README  file (in the zip), with one slight adaptation:  The  i263_32.drv  and  cm32.acm drivers go in  \winnt35\system32      The file is downloadable from this page. I downloaded the codec from the Intel site but there is no sound!

The codec from the Intel site lacks the IMC coder audio codec.  Download and install the I263 codec I use in my AVI files from this page. As always SCAN ANY .EXE or .DLL FILE YOU DOWNLOAD WITH A GOOD ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM!!!!!!    Yes, I know these files are virus free, but to be safe always remember that rule!  It is a Federal crime to upload a virus to the Net.    If you have any reservations don't download these files.
