............. I still find it hard to believe that they have decided to take this wonderful show off after 35 years! I have enjoyed watching this show for 30+ years. ............. I have been watching Another World since I as a teenager and I'm now in my mid 40's. This would be a great loss to not be able to see the cast whom I've grown to love for so many years. I like the quality of the show and most of all the longivety of the cast members. They've stayed together and given their very best. I think that say a lot about a cast who have worked together for so many years. They like each other, they like their fans and they like their employer. The writers, producers, stage crew, and those who are behind the scenes are to be commended for the wonderful work they produce. I would hate to see this show come to an end. ............. As an instructor at a university, I have only shared my affection for soap opera with a few people who are generally highly amused. But like many, I got "hooked" by my Mom who took some ribbing from me when I initially found out that she watched. Within days, she and I settled in to watch together and it was a simple, guilty pleasure we shared until her death. I'm so sad to see "Another World" canceled. I enjoyed the solid, smart characters, excellent cast and story lines that generally were about real people and not the paranormal (Lumina was not my favorite). Levitation, glowing eyes and interminable story lines were generally not a feature of Another World, thank heaven. Like many, I feel it is shortsighted of NBC to sponsor what promises to be another silly, fatuous, droning, drama filled with beautiful, vacuous faces and "who cares" story lines. I started watching AW as a toddler with my mother. I am another of the third generation AW fans. How could NBC even THINK of cancelling this American icon???? ............. I swtiched to AW when Days became so repetitive and grossly boring. I have watched GH, AMC, OLTL and the EoN over the past 20+ years. No other soap has got to me the way AW has. It is fun, the actors are brilliant, and even when others have said the storylines/writing was not at its best, it still far surpassed every other soap on the air. AW has never been boring or repetitive. It has been fast-paced, full of drama, romance, adventure, humor and sadness. It has touched me in a way that no other soap was ever able to. I have looked forward to my evening ritual of relaxation with AW. I fast-forward through DOOL. Now, I will turn my VCR off. I will no longer tape any daytime soaps. I'm done with it. (unless, of course, AW is picked up by another network, in which case, I will be elated!). I have never understood why AW stays low in the ratings. Lack of proper advertising, perhaps? I just sorta stumbled on AW. It wasn't through commercials that led me to Bay City. It was by occassionally taping the last few minutes prior to DOOL, and then being completely frustrated fast-forwarding through all the repetiviness of Days. For a time it seemed that the actors on Days were just told to repeat and repeat again the lines they had said the days before. Not so on AW. Everyday on AW new lines, new plots, new twists, new dimensions. You miss one day of AW, and you miss alot! TPTB never promoted AW in the way that they promoted DOOL. What a shame. The actors on AW have far out-acted any actor on Days. I can't say enough about how disappointed I am at the cancellation of AW. Or, how much I am hoping that another network will continue with this excellent soap. You know, AW never had to pull out demons or earthquakes or Titanic disasters to keep its characters and storyline compelling. It has been an honest show devoted to maintaining truth, honesty, friendship, loyalty, marriages, children, adventure, romance. It has been a shining beacon to the way things should be, rather than shouldn't. (for example, on Days, someone can bury someone alive, drug someone, take their memory away, commit murder, and all sorts of atrocities and NEVER pay the consequences!!! they make it seem like evil and bad behavior are qualities to admire!!!!). AW let their characters be married and survive!!! AW showed that being truthful and honest are GOOD and admirable qualities. OK. I've ranted long enough. I could continue, obviously. I think that they should all just move to another network and keep on going for years and years. ............. There are four people I can blame on this cancellation. One: The network (NBC)-ever since it went to 90 minutes and then back to an hour, it stopped the show from exploring a lot of different avenues, plus affiliates were able to tinker around with the network schedule since the show was sent on a "carry-if-you-want-to" basis. And the plan worked: get viewers pissed off at the show, the ratings will go down and they will cancel it. Second factor: TPTB at P&G-They should have learned their lesson about hiring Jill Farren Phelps when she allowed the killing off of Mo Bauer at GL. John Valente was just starting to flesh out the characters, when both CBS and NBC said that the P&G shows need to improve or they're outta there. Phelps allowed the killing off of Ryan Harrison, Frankie Frame, the dismissals of Sandra Ferguson, Lisa D. Brenner, Les Brandt, et al. Then Charlotte Savitz let go of John Bolger, Charles Keating, Robin Christopher, David Forsyth and Kale Browne because they felt they didn't fit the canvas. Three: Nielsen-AW's ratings were in the toilet true, but that was among viewers that report to Nielsen. What about people that work and tape? What about people who happen to watch outside the home (like in a department store, an electronics store, a friend's house)? These viewers are never counted and that's a shame. The final blame lies with so-called AW fan clubs who said don't watch when Charles Keating was let go. BIG BIG MISTAKE!!! AW's ratings were low enough and by not watching becuase the plots were bad, actors or actresses were let go was a final nail in the coffin. I stuck through AW through all of the bad times and the good times and although I am very sad to see it go, I will not give NBC Daytime another glance period. Along with AW going, they are getting rid of NBC NEWS AT SUNRISE. I like to watch it when I get ready for work in the morning. Since both of those things are going,there is nothing on NBC Daytime for me to watch. And since Scott Sassa, NBC Entertainment "resident idiot" says that they are going for teenyboppers while I don't fit that demographic, I'm outta NBC. I do give thanks to the cast and crew of AW for giving me a lot of great years of enjoyment, fantasy, romance and family triumphs and struggles. Hats off to Christoppher Goutman who at one point managed to pull AW within three tenths of a ratings point to catch up with OLTL. I've tried to get into other "soaps" on occasion, but found them boring or unrealistic or whatever. The thing I like the best about Another World, especially right now, are the actors and actresses. Some of the story lines have been kind of hokey, but the characters and the people who play them have kept me watching, even though I work full time outside the home. I tape the program every day and watch it when I have some free time. We are all extremly disappointed and upset that this program has been cancelled. ............. I am so sorry nbc Cancelled Another World, I too have watched for many years(30+). And I will do all I can to boycot nbc and proctor and gamble. The writing has been poor of late, but that happens to all shows, get new writers, new exciting storylines (far out is ok). A few of the actors are pretty basic, but this has been my story and I am not a happy person at this time. Scott Sassa is the man responsible for the cancellation, he says that James Reilly is the new head writer for passions (which I will not watch).
