Soft music can be playing, if you find that conducive to achieving a totally relaxed state. Or if that proves to be too distracting, then total silence is good. "Set the stage" in whatever way you feel led to; candles or incense burning, music playing, soft lights, etc. The key is to create an atmosphere where you are comfortable and one which imparts a feeling of security.
Once you've settled into your chosen place, either focus on a candle flame for a few minutes and then close your eyes, or close your eyes right away. Visualize your area being surrounded by a golden light which will protect you and keep you safe during the meditation. Say any words you wish to affirm that you are surrounded by a golden, protecting light, and know that it is so. Still your mind by focusing on your breathing. Feel each cycle of breathing by watching the inhalation and then the exhalation. Count each exhale for a count of 4: 1, 2, 3, 4. And then repeat the count of 4 several more times. Quietly cease your counting and continue watching your breathing for a few more cycles.
Now look around you and discover that you are in a beautiful green forest. The vegetation is lush and the air is moist as you breathe in. Softly a bird calls to its companion far above you. You look upward through the tree leaves trying to see it, and catch a fleeting glimpse of color high up. Feel the coolness and notice how the few rays of sunlight stream through the trees. In places you can see shafts of liquid gold beaming downward to caress the earth, creating a mottled pattern on the springy ground.
You notice now a hard-packed pathway leading away in front of you. Curious, you start to follow the path and are delighted to see tiny woodland violets blooming a rich and vibrant purple along the path. You pause for a moment and stoop to get a better look at the tiny faces peering up at you. Then you rise and continue along your way.
As you move along the path you begin to unconsciously count your steps: 1, 2, 3. . . aren't the ferns growing among the bases of the trees a rich yellow-green? 7, 8, 9. . . a bunny scurries across the path and off among the bushes. . . 13, 14, 15. . . you notice that the light is getting brighter now. . . 19, 20, 21.
You emerge from the forest into a meadow and pause at the edge where the dense, cool forest merges into the bright warmth of the meadow. And as you look out across the grasses, you discover a riot of color as wildflowers bloom in profusion: reds, lavenders, yellows, blues, pinks, and every other color imaginable. You take a deep breathe, and exhale it slowly; savoring the warmth and the delicious fragrances that abound here.
Gradually you become aware of a faint sound and focus in on it. As you do so, you realize it is the sound of water running so you follow the sound. Out into the meadow and at an angle across towards the other side. And there among the grasses you discover a small stream babbling its way over pebbles and stones. You drop to your knees and dip a hand into the cool, clear liquid. As the water dribbles between your fingers, you run damp fingertips across your forehead feeling the wonderful refreshing essence of this special stream.
You settle down comfortably beside the stream to watch and listen to its laughing voice as it bubbles along. Loosing yourself for a moment in the soothing tranquillity of the sound. Soon you find yourself gazing out across the meadow again. Still listening to the babbling water, you softly gaze at the vibrating colors and the grass as it gently sways in a light breeze. Lost in this enchanting place, you sense you are completely safe and that no harm can enter here.
Slowly your awareness drifts to the forest on the opposite of the meadow from you. Not far within the forest all is dark and cool again, but as you wonder what might be found there, you notice a tiny bright white light far in the distance. You watch fascinated as it slowly grows larger and seems to come towards you a little. You focus all your attentions on that light, realizing that something wonderful is about to happen. And as you intently watch, the light grows brighter still, and comes slowly towards you until it hovers, like a bubble of white, just at the far edge of the meadow.
You wonder what it is, but it comes no closer. Then you realize that it won't intrude upon your sanctuary unless you ask it to. So now you mentally voice your desire and invite it to come closer. In response, the bubble drifts slowly towards you until it is hovering a few feet in front of you. Suddenly you realize that there is someone inside of the bubble of white light. And this being is waiting for your invitation.
You gently and solemnly invite the being to leave its bubble, and join you there by the stream. As you do, the bubble begins to dissipate until the person is left standing beside you. You realize that this is your Spirit Guide who has come to meet you. You invite the person to sit and visit with you.
Slowly you become aware that the sun is disappearing behind the trees, as the afternoon is slowly turning into evening. It is time for you to go, and reluctantly you and your Guide rise to your feet. You thank your Guide for coming to you, and working with you. You invite your Guide to be a part of your life on a daily basis, to help and instruct you in your walk through life.
Now you bid your Guide a fond farewell, knowing that you will never be far apart. And watch as the white bubble again forms around the being, then drifts back into the forest, slowly receding to a tiny light in the distance.
You make your way across the meadow back to the path you came on, and taking one last look back at the beauty of the meadow, engulfed in long shadows, you start along the path. Again you count your steps: 21, 20, 19. . . shadows deepen here as well. . . 15, 14, 13. . . the tiny violets have closed their petals getting ready for the twilight. . . 9, 8, 7. . . a lone bird whistles softly. . . 3, 2, 1.
Gradually the forest fades away, and you become increasingly aware of your physical surroundings. You sit for a few moments longer, relishing your experience as you become more and more aware of the sounds and things around.
When you are ready, open your eyes, and take a couple of deep breathes to ground and center yourself back in your physical body and environment.
