Astronomy Presentations in 2004


The Trifid Nebula, found in Sagittarius, is a cloud of ionized hydrogen gas illuminated by the nearby

star cluster HN40. Trifid is 5.200 light years distant of 30,160 million million miles or 48,860 million

million kilometers. Although visible in binoculars, an 8-inch telescope is required to see the obscuring

dust lanes radiating out from the center and dividing the nebula into 3 parts, hence its name - Trifid.

Trifid's official names are M20 and NGC 6514. The dark lanes are designated B85.
