THE LITERATURE OF GERIATRIC MEDICINE: IMPORTANT RECENT AND CLASSIC REFERENCES Todd H. Goldberg, M.D., FACP Geriatrics Fellowship/Education Director, Division of Geriatrics, Albert Einstein Medical Center; Asst. Professor of Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine Philadelphia, PA Version 3.9, 1999 Preface: The field of geriatrics has become increasingly important due to the aging of our population and advances in research and practice. The term geriatrics refers to the clinical care of elderly patients, in contrast to gerontology which refers to the broader study of aging. As a specialty, geriatric medicine has received new legitimacy with the advent of accredited fellowships and a certifying examination cosponsored by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Family Practice. Clinicians are increasingly faced with an elderly patient population whose care requires considerable knowledge of aging pathophysiology and a multidisciplinary approach to evaluation and treatment. This bibliography summarizes the key literature of this burgeoning field, listing what we believe to be many of the most important recent or classic reviews and studies of key geriatric topics, as well as our own works. General or cross- disciplinary references are listed first, followed by more specific topics by organ system or related medical specialties. Articles are not listed in any definite order, except that the most recent or important references are generally listed first. Articles marked with asterisk (*) are among the best or most important on the topic, are contained in the readings given to trainees at Albert Einstein Medical Center, and comprise key/core references which might be suggested as basic required reading for geriatrics trainees. This bibliography has been distributed in various formats to residents, students and fellows at the Philadelphia Geriatric Center, Temple University and Albert Einstein Medical Center, and earlier the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia PA.
