CALDWELL PARISH

was created in 1838 from territories in Catahoula and Ouachita Parishes. Columbia is the parish seat. It is south of Monroe, Louisiana, situated in the north central part of Louisiana. Two of its many famous citizens are Governor John J. McKeithen and Marine General Graves Erskine.

IT IS THOUGHT

Hernando de Soto passed through Caldwell Parish during his travels down the Ouachita River in 1542. Bienville found a Ouachita Indian village where Columbia sits today. Other "names" in Caldwell Parish include H. Cantillion, an Irish Gentleman; Don Juan Filhoil; and Jean Lecuyer, the first recorded white settler in 1784.

THE FIRST PARISH

Police Jurists were Joshua Ewing, James Wooldridge and John Williams. William B. Snow was the first Parish Judge.
