Abraham Wing, son of Edward Wing and Sarah Tucker

ABRAHAM WING
SON OF EDWARD WING AND SARAH TUCKER
GREAT GRANDSON OF DANIEL WING AND HANNAH SWIFT

Abraham Wing, (Edward Wing, Daniel Wing, Daniel Wing, Rev. John Wing, Matthew Wing) was born at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts on November 26, 1721. He died May 3, 1795 at Glens Falls, Warren Co., New York at the age of seventy-three. Abraham is buried in the little burial ground where the old Quaker meeting-house once stood. In accordance with the customs of members of that particular sect of Quakers, Abraham does not have a burial monument to mark his grave. However, he does have a tablet erected in his honor for founding Wing Falls, which would later be known as Glens Falls, New York.

Abraham Wing married Anstis Wood on May 7, 1741 at Dartmouth, Bristol Co., Massachusetts. She was the daughter of William Wood and Hannah Shaw. Antis died May 29, 1807 at Glens Falls, Warren Co., New York at the age of eighty-three.

Abraham was a Quaker, and three years after his marriage to Antis Wood, in 1744, Abraham and Antis settled at the Oblong. He purchased a tract of 180 acres of land from his step-father and father-in-law, William Wood, of Dartmouth. His lands were upon Quaker Hill, a fertile plateau 1600 feet above tidewater, overlooking several counties in three states.

It was on May 29, 1762 that a patent was granted to twenty-three people for a granted of one thousand acres to each which embraced the territory six miles square in Warren County New York. The area was then called Queensbury. Within a month, only four of the original patentees remained in possesion. On July 10, 1762, at a meeting held at the blacksmith shop of Abraham's son-in-law, Nehemiah Merritt, at Quaker Hill, the grant was divided by lots and Abraham was fortunate to draw three of the lots originally known as Wing's Falls, later changed to Glens Falls. Not only was Wing's Falls romantic, it was also known for it's valuable water-power. Abraham erected a grist mill and saw mill upon this water power and in 1766 moved there with his family and some of his neigbors.

Abraham Wing was a tailor by occupation and at the first meeting held at Wing's Falls, he was elected supervisor of the small settlement. Abraham held that officed for twenty years, during which time he was also the minister, the attorney, and the merchant/inn keeper of the settlement.

Abraham made his will on September 20, 1794, a short eight months before his death on May 3, 1795. The will was probated on May 27, 1795. He, with his family, suffered serious losses during the struggle for Independence, chiefly through the appropriations and requisitions made by the American army, and for which no adequate compensation was ever received. Abraham was decidedly patriotic although that very patriotism was questioned because of his religious beliefs. Because he was a Quaker, he did not actively engage in any of the military conflicts during the Revolution. He remained an earnest and consistent member of the Society of Friends to the end of his life.
