SAMUEL SPOONER
SON OF EXPERIENCE WING AND SAMUEL SPOONER

Samuel Spooner Jr.(Experience Wing, Daniel Wing, Rev. John, Matthew), born February 4, 1692/93 at Dartmouth. Samuel died 1781 at Dartmouth at the age of 88 years. Samuel Spooner was married twice. His first marriage was to Rebecca Weston on April 10, 1717 at Duxborough, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts. Rebecca was born about 1698 at Duxborough, the daughter of John Weston and Deborah Delano. Rebecca died January 26, 1728/29 at Dartmouth, Bristol Co., Massachusetts at the age of 30. Samuel Spooner's second marriage was to Deborah Pope on March 8, 1728/29...a short two months after the death of his first wife. Deborah Pope was born about 1693, the daughter of Isaac Pope and Alice Mind.

Samuel Spooner received in his inheritance from his father, Samuel Spooner, a large tract of land that was east of the river Achushnet at Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Because of his careful planning, Samuel was able to keep his inheritance intact and increased his ownership by purchasing other lots of land which he finally transferred to his son, Elnathan, free from encumbrance.

Samuel Spooner's house, along with a generous part of the land connected to it, remained in the family until 1855 when it was purchased by a Mr. Dillingham who bought it from Lemuel Spooner.

Samuel was a farmer. He held several minor town offices. He was a regular attendant on church worship at Acushnet. he worshiped at the Congregational Church of Acushnet, which was formed early in the last century. Ricketson says: "The meeting-house, taken down a few years since, having been long unoccupied and in a dilapidated condition, stood upon the hill about half a mile to the eastward of the village of Acushnet. The old grave-yard, however, still remains, - one of the most ancient and interesting burial-places in the Old Colony domaine." In this cemetery were interred the remains of Elnathan, and of his wife and his grand-daughter, Elizabeth Spooner.
