BS (BLACK SOULS)
A Brief History
The leaves of
Laurelindor have fallen 700 times since we closed of the Dark Portal of Evil.
My beloved companions in that quest have long since passed on to the next
realm. I still remember them in the trance every night. What would they think
if they could look upon all of the goodness we have wraught in this world?
Before my friends
and I set out on out momentous quest, this world was seeped in darkness and evil.
Long ago was a Golden Age, yet it is unknown how the world turned from that Age
into the Age of Darkness that fell. The Golden Age is now nothing more than a
myth as those who once remembered it have passed on. During the dark times,
many of the strongholds of learning were destroyed, much that was one known was
lost.
With Evil
threatening to overwhelm us all, my friends and I set upon the ultimate quest,
to find the source of evil. With the valiant Naem Cotterling, Sword-Brother of
Alfathur, heroic Guntar Bloodfist, a wild half-orc, the stout Orin Foehammer,
warrior of Throbelihig, cheerful Tom Sandyhill, a roguish halfling, the
beautiful and pious Nazahah Kath'ahar, priestess of Alfathur. Our quest was
frought with much peril and hardship, but we persevered. We journeyed the
length and breadth of the known world searching for that which would aid us in
our glorious cause.
When we had
learned enough, I sequestered myself for a year to craft the Key. When it was
ready, we traveled to the place where the Dark Portal touched our realm of
existance. You see the Portal was a metaphysical construct exsisting in another
dimension of reality. But we found one place here on this world where the
Portal comes closest. Using the Key we managed to close the portal and lock it
away.
Knowing that the
Gods of Evil would be greatly injured by this act, we purposed to hide the
portal and break up the key. The gods could still touch the world, but without
the Dark Portal, their touch was limited. It took much of my accumulated power
and knowledge, but we moved the Dark Portal to a new location that would be
difficult to find. Although I hated to do so, we broke up the Key into eight
pieces. Two pieces were given to Alfathur and Kryliah to do with as they
willed. The others were divided amongst my trusted companions to hide in
secretive places with such wards and traps as to keep the servants of evil from
gaiining their possession.
My companions
went home to their reward and retirement. They have had children and their children's
children have had children. I am all that is left of those days. Here I sit in
my Citadel of Light, watching the world change for the better. It has been a
good life...
-- Thamior
Silverwood, High Magus of the Order of Light. Scribed in the year 700 ADP.
PREMISE
700
Hundred years ago, a band of heroic adventurers succeeded in the ultimate quest
and closed the Dark Portal of Evil.
The first hundred years immediately following was the Great Purge. During the hero's campaign, there was
much opposition. The Great Purge
was a pogrom lead by the various paladin's Orders and Good priests. They scoured the land to rid the world
of further influences and forces of evil.
The Druids and Rangers of the world saw what was happening and felt that
the balance must be maintained.
They moved in opposition to the Great Purge and found themselves being
decimated.
By
100 ADP, there were very few druids and rangers left alive. Those that still lived had to hide
within the deep forests. Oddly
enough, the Great Purge also targeted Bards. The powers that be saw the roguish talents that the bards
possessed and lumped them together with the thieves and assassins. Thamior Silverwood founded the Citadel
of Light on what is now called the Island of Light. There he devised a spell that would prove useful to the
forces of good. When a person is
convicted of a crime, rather than put them in jail, a resident member of the
Order of Light casts a spell on the offender. This spell irrevocably changes the person's alignment to
lawful good. A second spell is
then cast, which gives the offender a commoner's profession, such as a farmer.
By
700 ADP, there are Order of Light towers in every major city. They do not influence or attempt to
change the laws of the country that they are in. They only mete out the sentence when someone has been
convicted of a crime in that land.
But the benefit of having a criminal turned into a happy productive
citizen and not having to pay for a jail, is worth much.
