VH-1's "Behind The Music" offers a rare glimpse into the life, love and pain of one of the 70's most enigmatic teen idols, Leif Garrett. Aired for the first time tonight, so many myths were clarified and corrected that the true person behind the image was revealed for maybe the first time ever.

Leif's claim that his career was dominated by the Scotti Brothers would explain some otherwise seemingly incomprehensible choices of the music he recorded and the way it was packaged and presented. One may still fairly laugh at some of the silliness of his albums, but at least the man behind the work has had his chance to be heard.

The reunion with his former friend, who was paralyzed 20 years ago after Leif drove his Porsche off the side of the Hollywood freeway while intoxicated, was by far the most moving of this or perhaps any installment of the show. One hardly expects "60 Minutes"-style surprizes from entertainment outlets like VH-1, but this cinema verite encounter between Leif and his former pal, Roland Winkler was nothing less than riveting.

It would take immeasurable courage to seek and attempt to find redemption after two decades from someone for whose irreparable harm you are largely, if not solely, responsible. To boldly do so in front of television cameras ... well, let's just say Leif appears to be a person of remarkable integrity and maybe, just maybe, worthy of all the love and adulation he continues to engender from both his long-term and new, younger fans.

We'll still continue to poke fun at his teeny bopper career, but with a new-found respect and heartfelt appreciation for the man "behind the music."
