A Great  Standard Safety Practice

Remember for safety's sake, to never give out any personal information about yourself!
This includes any personal information about you that could allow anyone to physically locate you off line.  There are too many programs and sites online that would allow someone to locate you by using any of the following examples* alone or when used in combination.  Be careful about what you say when you are in a chat room. Remember that most school or team address books are now considered public information.  These are sometimes sold to people who do not attend, belong or are affiliated with your school.  You may want to double check your School District's policy regarding this.  If they allow non-student access to these books, you might want to get that policy changed.

*This includes any of the following information:

First and Last Name

School name

School Mascot

Sports Team Names or affiliations

Home telephone number

Home address (any part of)

Parent's name(s)

Age or Birthday (with year)

Social Security Number (in combination or alone)

Registration Tips for Web Sites that require it:

Here is a great tip on how to register at sites that require registration, like the New York Times Online.  It is ok to use your first name, but for your last name use your screen name, it will be easy for you to remember.  Whenever I register at these sites, I typically register as Susie TeacherNet.  Always use a different password than the one that you use for your internet provider!  Try to use something that you will remember easily, like the name of a candy or gum that you regularly use. <g>
