I am a member and currently the President of Twin County Schutzhund Club, and also a member of the United Schutzhund Clubs of America (USA). I have put Schutzhund titles on both Perp (pictured tracking and doing bite work), and Bella (pictured heeling and doing bite work). Perp is retired at this point, but I hope to continue to show and title Bella in the sport this year.
Schutzhund is a three phase dog sport that was originally created in Germany. The three phases are Tracking, Obedience and Protection.
There is actually a fourth phase in that all dogs must pass a temperament test every time the participate in a Schutzhund trial. Dogs that are aggressive or shy may not compete.
Because Schutzhund was designed as a temperament test, not just a sport, and because the dog must work all day and pass the temperament, tracking, obedience, and protection phases all in the same day, I like to buy my Search and Rescue Dog candidates from Schutzhund titled parents. The sport is designed to test dogs for intensity, prey and defense drives, and stable nerves. These are the same qualities I look for in a SAR dog.
I compete in the sport because it's fun!
There are three main organizations in the United States which offer Schutzhund titles to Doberman Pinschers. They are USA , DVG , and United Doberman Club Home Page . On good resource for information on Schutzhund is Schutzhund.Com .
is the French Protection sport. In the United States of America, French Ring trials and titles are offered by the North American Ring Association. An excellent write up on it with pictures of Doberman Pinschers can be found at UDC French Ring Sport Page a second resource is The French Ringsport Homepage .
