Group W Bench began with a few writers that were finishing an
online class on writing picture books. When our teacher, Barbara Seuling,
suggested it would be helpful to everyone if they were able to remain in
touch with their critique partners. I joined up with 6 of the most amazing
go-getters and together we built the foundation that supports and
encourages all genre of children’s writers and illustrators daily.
To new inquiries Group W Bench is online critique groups of 8
members in each. One person is group leader and moderator. Manuscripts
are critiqued in a scheduled rotation and according to set guidelines. Our
guidelines are formed from suggestions by S.C.B.W.I., Barbara Seuling, and
common sense. Changes within the group are voted on by its members.
Along with critiquing, individual groups produce an occasional workshop. A
specific topic is targeted and members enjoy guest speakers. They are
announced and all members are invited to participate.
To me Group W Bench is a family of fellow writers and illustrators. I
am using the word family because there isn’t a better description. Getting
to know my groupmates through sharing our writing, I realize we have the
same dreams and goals, working as a team to accomplish them. Like all
great families we shared the joy of new babies, the giant steps and
successes of our children and grandchildren, and the sorrow and pain of
illness and loss. Simply put, we’ve bonded. I would have never believed I
could become so close to people I have never seen.
My goals for Group W Bench beyond having valuable and necessary
critique sessions is for it to produce so many published writers and
illustrators that being a member would be an asset on a resume. With all
our shared information on format, POV, dialogue, structure, language,
action, publishers looking for specific genre, and more, we can’t loose. If it
progresses no further than where it is now, we’re still winners.
