Excerpt from A Smoker's Blog -
April 19, 2006 - Wednesday - I'm out of cigarettes again and I
have smoked just about every butt that I can find in the house! I don't have
any forseeable prospects but you never know what is just around the corner!
Excerpt from A Smoker's Blog -
June 19, 2003 - Thursday - Of course I am out of cigarettes again and
went to get 2 packs (all I could afford!) which probably will last me 2 days if that! On
my way home saw a gas station sign that advertised a carton of Kools for $55.00!

Smoking comments: I think the PA legislature has buried the voting information on
the cigarettes. I haven't been able to find a listing anywhere. I know there is one
on the Phil. news on a salesclerk had a list. Of course the reporter didn't bother
inquiring where it came from. This tax has nothing to do with smoking it has to do with
politicians doing anything they want to whatever segment of the population they want.
Every citizen in this country is at risk. SUV owners - you know they're after you as
well. You have enough money to buy an SUV so they're going to figure out how to get
their piece of your wallet. They also know your voting block isn't big enough to stop
them. Campers, hikers, mountain climbers, snowmobilers, hunters, fishermen - how much
of the public lands are you NOT allowed on? What, exactly, is the definition of
"public"? Those nitwit politicians are frothing at the mouth right now. They can't
wait for the lawsuits against the fast food places to get started paving the road to
equally horrendous taxes they can make you swallow as "social conscience". Once that
door is firmly propped open, they'll happily go after ice cream, candy - this road has
no end in sight. How long will it be till our entire paycheck is direct deposited to
the government and we're given housing &food vouchers that carry rules for what we're
"allowed" for redemtion of them? Go ahead - laugh! Before you laugh too loud, take
a long hard look at what liberties you DON'T have anymore! Take a long hard look at what
you're required to "contribute". Take a long hard look at your representative's local,
county, state &federal paychecks, pension benefits, health benefits and perks. You don't
really think WE have the same benefits, do you? Exactly whom do you think pays for all
that? Do you really think they don't want anymore? The U.S. congress receives their
pay raise AUTOMATICALLY. They must initiate a vote to STOP the payraise! Regardless
of the economy, regardless of your problems or wishes - hey, they get theirs first!
The original Henry Ford was once asked exactly how much money was "enough". He replied,
"Just a little bit more...". Believe me! Polititians see their constituancy as
a bottomless pit of money. All they have to do is keep us stupid enough for them to
get it. Just bury it in some unrelated bill - even if we do find it, we're too dumb
to remember come election time. How many senior citizens remember the tax increase
on their social security checks that balanced the federal budget? Do you remember it?
Everyone's getting older - the day's coming that you'll see the effect of it! When
I was young, politians were automatically seen as scoundrals. Everyone knew, if you
took your eyes off them for a second, they'd steal you blind! How did they ever
convince the general population they are paragons of character and goodness?

- Brooklyn, Female Age 36 to 50 Smoker- At 11:59 on Dec. 31st , I lit up
a cigarette in defiance of all that is expected of people in making New
Year's resolutions. Smokers should never concede to the will of others.
Only their own.
It was several years ago that I visited
O'Hare so it could well be different now I will be traveling that way soon,
so will check it out and try to get back to you. I do remember though, once
when I was driving across country, I needed to stop for something to eat
in one of the middle states. I usually go for the Truck Stops as they generally
have good food at fair prices. I saw one that ahd a huge sign out front
which read "No NONSMOKING Areas Available" - this, of course, was to much
to resist. I stopped and had a wonderful meal and left feeling good that
there were still areas non-prejudiced against smokers in the US. I wish
I could remember the name - but it was about 10 years ago
Just flew cross country and all the airports I stopped
at (Norfolk VA, Cinn. OH, and Portland OR) all had smoking areas. While I
was in Portland though I had a strange experience though - On New Year's Eve
I went to this bar that serves mircobrews and when I lit up was asked to go
outside - this was not a dinner bar and Oregon does not have a No Smoking
in the bars law as of yet. I was a little shocked and fairly upset by this
little obsequious punk and his superior non-smoking attitude - I stayed though
as I was there with my sister whom I hadn't seen in a while and didn't t want
to make a scene. On the positive side I did meet some great people out on
the balcony and we already had something to talk about (mainly the a**hole
inside).

Comments:I'm
a smoker too. Count yourself lucky...with Fed and State taxes accounting for
more than 50% of the product price. I pay AUS 6.50 for that same pack of smokes.
The bureaucracy here is encouraging us to give (it) up.
You should
see some of the email that I have gotten. One came from outside the US and their
cigarettes cost twice as much as in the United States. I don't see as
many people going outside to smoke as I used to. Actually I just watched
a news broadcast about people in New Jersy crossing the bridge to come over
here in Penna just to get a lower price on cigarettes! And now its considered
illegal to get them here and go back to New Jersy. This whole cigarette
thing has gotten out of hand. What do you think your cutoff price would
be for cigarettes?' I think if they go up any more I won't be able to afford
them and then I'll be forced to quit!

Comments:
Is there a way to get the names of the politicians that vote for (the)
increased taxes on cigarettes and restrictive smoking polices? If so
the next time I encounter a deranged, ranting tax payer with blood in his eyes,
I can whip out my list and send him to the closest offender. A tool is
a tool!

The World Health Organization (WHO) has dubbed the 2003 World No Tobacco Day

I've just learned that New York's Public Health Law #1399-11, which
will effectively ban the online and mail-order purchase of cigarettes for personal use
by residents in the state of New York, shall take effect on June 18, 2003. This is a
very ominous development, not only would it be catastrophic for New York smokers, but
should New York succeed in this endeavor, other states would certainly enact similar
laws. OLTRA is attempting to obtain a court order restraining New York from implementing
this law. Though I am not a lawyer, this law seems constitutionally dubious to me.

Hello
I'm a reporter who covers tobacco issues. I was wondering whether
you might know of any smokers-- anyplace in the country-- who smoke Merit, or
who recently smoked Merit. I'm doing a story on the Merit brand and
would love to reach out to some of the customers who have tried and used the
cigarettes.
Many thanks in advance!
