"Ingen årsak"

An artist's rendering of the sloop "Restoration" which in 1825 brought 45 Quakers and 7 crewmen to New York. The beginning of the large scale emigration from Norway to the New World.

At first it was mainly individuals and the young who left for the New World, but by the mid-19th century whole families were making the trip.

"The Syversson's"

Artist rendition of a "Brig" ship . The Brig was usually a much smaller vessel than the Bark and Ship rigged vessels. The Brig is a vessel with two masts (fore and main), both of which are square rigged. The foremast is made in three spars and square-rigged. On the mainmast there is a standing gaff to which is rigged a small fore-and-aft sail.

The Ship Harmonie {of Flekkefjord}departed Bergen on May 6, 1870 and arrived in ballast, Quebec, June 25th 1870. She was carrying 258 steerage passengers and 4 cabin passengers. One birth, two deaths; 1. infant born May 9th died on May 19th. 2. A seaman died of  phthisis=wasting away {TB?} Harmonie was mastered by Captain P. M. Fuglesang, with a crew of 13.

Notes: They were Cotters at Grindstugu u. Lyngve in Lom. They had five (5) children.

Ingeborg Eriksdatter Born: 5 February 1831, Grindstugu u. Norway. Died 18 April 1913, Linden Twp. Brown Co., Minnesota. Married: 1856 Syver Jakobsson.

Eldri Eriksson Born: 30 July 1837, Norway

Jakob Olsson ,Born; c.1788 Died; 1880. Married 1821 Marit Hansdatter Born; 1801 Died; 1834

Notes: They both came from Dovre further north in Gudbrandsdalen, migrated into Lom ca 1829 and settled as Cotters at the Cotters place Jordet under the main farm Andvord. Jakob married 2nd widow Toro Guttormsdtr. and moved to her cotter's place Sore Kjaestadteigen u. Kjaestad (no children from the 2nd marriage)

Jacob Syversson Born: 15 April 1863, Lom. Oppland Co., Gudbrandsdalen, Norway. Died: 9 May 1935, Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., Minnesota. Married 15 June 1882, Ronnaug Hansdatter.

Marit Syversdatter B: Norway.

Elisa Syversson B: September 1877, Minnesota. Died 1962, Minnesota.  Married Herman Dahl.

Note:  At the Time of Jakob's birth, his mother's name was listed as Ericksdatter Teigen. On the 1865 census they are living at Teigen, unit of Kjæstad. Syver is listed as a "tenant farmer with some land". Syver & Ingeborg Jakobsson migrated to America in 1870, and settled first in Lake Hanska, then bought a farm in Linden Twp. Minnesota. Jakob was 7 years old at the time of this voyage.

Hans Syversson Born: 14 February 1827 Died: at Blekastad in 1907. Married : 1855 Anne Jakobsdatter Born: 14 November 1831 Died: 1882. They lived at Borgeurdi (spelled Ulen) before they bought Blekastad in 1874. Hans married 2nd in 1900, Mari Rasmusdtr. Moen Born: 1850. All children emigrated to the USA except Anne.

Jacob Hansson Born: 7 January1860 Norway. Lived in Linden Twp. at the time of Ronnaug's death.

Syver Hansson Born: 31 December 1863. Emigrated 1881. Lived in Linden Twp. at the time of Ronnaug's death.

Hans Hansson Born: 16 June 1866 Norway. Emigrated 1882. Lived in Worley, Idaho at the time of Ronnaug's death.

Note: At the time of Ronnaug's birth the family lived on the farm unit Borgeulen of Borgen and her mother's name is listed as Jakobsdatter Borgen. On the 1865 census Hans'  occupation is listed as "miller".  Hans & Anne Syversson migrated to America in 1878, Ronnaug was 22 years old. There were 12 children in this family, 7 were living at the time of Ronnaug's death in 1933.

Arthur Syversson Born: January 1899 Minnesota. Died at 18 months old.

Note: Jacob Syversson resided in Lake Hanska with his parents for a short time. They then bought a farm in Linden Twp. Jacob & Ronnaug Syversson homesteaded (about 4 years) in Fairland, along the Black River,(see homestead picture on home page) Koochiching Co., Minnesota. Jacob also worked for a short time in the state of Washington. They later settled in Hanska, Brown Co., Minnesota.
