Have you ever taken a picnic lunch while visiting cemeteries during the pleasant months of the year? Why not do the same during the snowy winter and early spring months? Some of us are undaunted when it comes to visiting a new cemetery -- the time of year (or weather) doesn't stop us when the urge or opportunity strikes. Some cemeteries actually look entirely different during the winter when the leaves are gone from the trees. It may be easier to see (and photograph) monuments that are virtually covered with foliage and low hanging branches in the summer. Gray skies with blue patches and fresh, crunchy snow provide a dramatic setting that emphasizes the monument instead of the landscaping. It's fun to look for the harbingers of spring: snowdrops, crocus, and of course, robins…
What should you take along? Well, you can either simply pack your favorite sandwiches -- or -- you can make up a feast that will take away the chill. Think thick savory stews, rich chunky soup or spicy chili. Don't forget fresh crusty herbed bread or for a real treat -- sticky buns. Keep everything in an insulated container or thermos. Add steamy coffee or tea and your all set.
Be sure to bring a thick blanket or pad to sit on. Enjoy the quietness of winter and pay close attention to the tracks you can find in the snow. Some animals like deer or foxes may never be seen, but you can see evidence of their foraging visits when no one is around. Maybe you'll bring some lunch for them, too. Just don't leave food wrappings or napkins behind, though -- please make sure to clean up after yourself.
A brisk walk following your repast will get the blood pumping again, but be extra careful of low depressions in the ground and near the edge of more rugged terrain. Don't forget to ask permission at the office of larger cemeteries, too. So dress warmly, bring your picnic and your camera and have a wonderful time!
