He also competed in the National Sports Festival (1981) and Olympic Festival (1986). He was the World Maccabiah Games javelin champion in 1985.

CEO's note: Charley's 57.13 toss would have ranked him No. 4 nationally in 1995 in the M35 age group. He and his thrower wife, Carla, also are giving back to the sport. He writes: "Recently we were able to acquire 'sponsorship' with the good people at Oregon Track Equipment of Eugene, Oregon in our endeavors to bring the javelin throw to the list of official events on the Ohio high school program. O.T.E. has agreed to provide rubber-tipped 'safety javelins' for an experimental program involving two local high schools. Carla and I will lend our expertise on a volunteer basis in teaching the basics of javelin throwing. We hope to establish a running dialogue with the Ohio High School Athletic Board, as we develop a base of young throwers, with the intention of gaining their support and approval."
