Webmaster TC: Joe Faust

Joe Faust, senior VP for near-legends

Name: Joe Faust, joefaust@hotmail.com

Born: September 21, 1942

Occupation: Hang-glider enthusiast with a High Jump Page

Home: Los Angeles, California, USA

All-time T&F bests: Held age-15 record in high jump of 6-8 1/4. Held national junior college record of 7-2 1/8. Was third amateur to clear 7-0 (Olympic Trials, Stanford, 1960, at age 17, baby of the Men's T&F USA team for Rome Olympics.)

Masters achievements: He wrote in fall 1996: "I am presently practicing after a long absence; I am managing a back injury incurred from hastily lifting a heavy hospital bed. My current practice mark is 5-4 at age 54 (no numeric pun intended). I aim to build my next takeoff shoe; someone broke into my locker years ago and took my favorite old-time jump shoe. I am with a nice fat layer at 197 lbs.; I aim to get to 184 lbs. some day."

Trivia: When Valeri Brumel held the WR of 7-4 1/4, Joes says he jumped 7-4 3/4 in the 1962 Mt. SAC Relays in California -- "carefully measured and witnessed by many top jumpers." He says the bar stayed up for a full count of 10, but came off. In a 1962 workout, he says, he had a very near miss at 7-9.

CEO's note: Joe would be instantly world-class in M50 category with a 5-4 mark. But he'd be behind current M60 jumpers Milt Newton and Phil Fehlen -- as well as Herm Wyatt's age-54 record of 6-0. Let's hope the bar stays on for his next record jump.
