EARTH DAY STATEMENT BY MARGARET MEAD
Earth Society Foundation Board Meeting
December 8, 1976

"You see the conceptulization here is primarily the idea of using the actuality of the planet as the basis of human behavior and transcending national ideological boundaries. That's the basic idea, "Earth Day." All the other ideas flow from that.

That's the conceptulizations that we owe to John [McConnell]. It wasn't conceptulized by any one else. This is the first real proposal that doesn't have silly dates like B. C. and A. D. in it.
Or clocks out at Kennedy to tell you what time it is in Tokyo in terms of a 12 hour clock. This is a basic and important concept which nobody's got. The U. N. doesn't use any kind of measures that are independent of ideology or national history.

And it is a very basic concept."
