THE SCOOP

"Union", the Emmy award winning Civil War short film from Directors Joey Castanieto and Kevin Smets, is about to recieve a major over-haul. The directors have been in the works for the past couple months on the feature version of the film. Those who saw it remember a story about two brothers in the Union army: Charles, a freshly trained private who has been put under the command of his older brother, Cpt. William Lawrence. A sibling rivalry develops and the two are split apart, not only by themselves, but also when a scouting mission gone wrong places William in the hands of the confederate army.

The feature shares the same basic themes, but takes the story to new levels not explored in the Short version: action, adventure, swirled with the prevailing themes of racism, hatred, tolerance, and the harsh realities of war.

Long time collaborators in both film and television, Joey Castanieto and Kevin Smets return as Directors for the feature.

Also linked to the "Union" project: Mike Turley, Producer: Has worked in North Carolina before developing and producing award winning shows, and can't wait to bring "Union" to production in NC.

Erika Jacobson, Co-Producer: Has worked with directors Smets/Castanieto as award winning Production Designer of thier latest film "The Syndicate", which screened at the Cannes Film Festival this past year. She also led the make-up department for the short film version of "Union".

The film is currently looking for financing to take the project into production.

EXT. RIVERBED CLEARING - DAY

The soldiers walk through the clearing, their shoes sink into the moist ground. Deep, resonating BOOMS echo through the land. Distant sounds of gunfire and musketry can barely be heard.

PETERSON

Wha’ month we in?

JAMES

It’s gotta be July by now. We’ve been movin’ for about a week.

The BOOMS continue, grabbing Charles’ attention.

PETERSON

Glory hallelujah! Sounds like the war will be over by sundown, boys!

JAMES

God willing!

SLUG

Spare us with your biblical phrases.

JAMES

I take it you’re not a Christian?

SLUG

You kiddin’? A Christian is a man who feels bad on a Sunday, for what he did on a Saturday...

Turns and nudges Charles playfully.

SLUG

And what he will do on a Monday.

CHARLES

Where’s that comin’ from anyway?

SLUG

Sounds northward to me. It’s gotta be a skirmish, tho’. Last I heard our armies we’re headed for some hol’ in the wall called Gettysburg.

PETERSON

Nah, ol’ man. Tha’s too far north. Ain’t no fightin’ goin’ on there.

They continue walking, entering a section of heavy vegetation.
