Dr. Albion Martin; Co. I, 33rd Vir. Vol. Inf.
These series of letters were written by Albion Martin. Before enlisting in Co. I just before First Manassas, he was a dentist. He served as Commissary of the 33rd and then later as Quartermaster. The letters were graciously "computerized" by his great-great grandson David Rutherford who provided them for inclusion in this site.
Sgt. Ferdinand Dunlap; Co. D, 33rd Vir. Vol. Inf.
These two letters are written by Dunlap to family members in March and June of 1863. His service record indicates that he died of heart disease on Nov. 14th 1863 at the age of 28.
Capt. Michael Shuler; Co. H, 33rd Vir. Vol. Inf.
This section contains selected excerpts from a diary kept by Shuler. It covers a period from about June to December of 1862 and includes some narratives of important battles.
Col. Arthur Cummings; 33rd Vir. Vol. Inf.
This is a letter that Col. Cummings, organizer and first commanding officer of the 33rd Virginia, wrote to the editor of the Southern Historical Society Papers. This is an apparently solicited account of the unit's action at First Manassas.
Capt. George R. Bedinger; Co. E, 33rd Vir. Vol. Inf.
This is a collection of letters from the Bedinger family. George Bedinger was appointed Captain of Company E from the rank of Private by special orders. He was killed at Gettysburg July 3rd, 1863.
Maj. Jacob Golladay, Jr.; Co. B, 33rd Vir. Vol. Inf.
This is a letter written by Golladay (then a Capt.) May 8th, 1863. It is written to his brother after the battle of Chancellorsville.
Sgt. William Montgomery; Co. A, 33rd Vir. Vol. Inf.
These six letters are a sample of those written by Montgomery to family members. Born January 30, 1838, Montgomery enlisted in Co. A June 6, 1861 as a Sergeant and was wounded at First Manassas. In June of 1862, he deserted the Infantry and joined Co. C, 18th Virginia Cavalry which was primarily men from his home in Hampshire County. He was captured at Spotsylvania and was a POW at Ft. Delaware. After taking the oath, he was released June 20, 1865. He died June 6, 1921 and is buried near his home in Springfield (W)Va. The letters are edited for spelling and known discrepancies and some footnotes are included for references to various people or places.
