Andrew Jr., Rod. Long Gray Lines: The Southern Military School Tradition, 1839-1915. Univ. of North Carolina Pr. 2001 [This book examines a prominent feature of higher education in the nineteenth-century South -- the military school. Andrews explains how these schools were less concerned with preparing young men for actual combat then they were with instilling values such as honor, patriotism, civic duty, and virtue. "Long Gray Lines tells well a neglected story -- the role of military training in southern colleges and universities. But it does much more. Andrew skillfully employs his analysis of educational goals and institutional growth to illuminate larger themes central to the history of the New South: the nature of the Lost Cause, the fate of the republican tradition after the Civil War, and most important, the development of the southern military tradition." -- Gaines M. Foster, Louisiana State University. "Andrew's stimulating investigation of the southern military school tradition yields original insights into why and how southerners, more than other Americans, equated martial valor with civic virtue. His work enriches -- often challenges -- our current understanding of central themes in regional culture and will reward all readers interested in the roots of southern ethics and behavior." -- Winfred B. Moore Jr., The Citadel.]

Barbuto, Richard V. Niagara 1814: America Invades Canada. Univ. Pr. of Kansas 2000 [(Although this book came out late in 2000, it is new to our site.) This is a comprehensive account of US efforts to grab Canada from British control during the War of 1812. "An impressive and important addition to the historical works on the War of 1812. Comprehensive in scope and detailed in its analysis, Barbuto's study is also a sheer pleasure to read and will most certainly become the standard work on the subject." -- Timothy D. Johnson. "Barbuto makes an original and valuable contribution to our understanding of the War of 1812. His study is unmatched for its comprehensiveness and balance and should be welcomed by scholars and general readers with a strong interest in good military history." -- William Skelton.]

Baumgart, Winfried. The Crimean War 1853-1856. [Modern Wars Series] Arnold (UK)/Oxford Univ. Pr. (US) 1999 [A military, political, and diplomatic history of the war covering the main, and minor, theatres of the war. Berner, Brad K. The Spanish-American War: A Historical Dictionary. [Historical Dictionaries of War, Revolution, and Civil Unrest, no. 8] Scarecrow Pr. 1998 ["Berner covers military, diplomatic, political, economic, and social aspects of the conflict. This includes people, places, battles, units, weapons over the course of the 450 pages. Entries are substantive and range from one paragraph to several pages, e.g., the MaineÕs demise has three entries (one for the ship, one for the investigations, and one for the newspaper coverage) running about four pages. Berner rounds out his work with a chronology, an eight-page introductory summary of the war, its causes and aftermath, and a twenty-seven page bibliography." -- Fritz Heinzen, Paper Wars magazine, issue #31.]

Pr. of Kansas 1999 ["Alexander Doniphan was a major player in the story of American territorial expansion in the mid-neineteenth century, and here he finally gets his due. This should appeal to general readers as well as scholars." -- Robert W. Johannsen. "Sheds new light on the significant contributions of Doniphan, a politician-turned-soldier who achieved fame as a bona fide neineteenth-century American hero. This book is a must for historians interested in the politics of conquest and expansionism." -- Richard Bruce Winders.]

Eisenhower, John S.D. So Far from God: The U.S. War with Mexico, 1846-1848. Univ. of Oklahoma Pr. 2000 [This book was originally published in 1989. "The story of this 'dirty little war' is splendidly narrated by Gen. John Eisenhower. . . . Not only do his background and special expertise provide graphic and detailed descriptions of the battles themselves, but he offers insightful portraits of the many colorful personalities who crowd the pages of this book." -- Robert V. Remini, Washington Post Book World. "A cool and thoughtful look at the understated conflict which preceded and shaped the Civil War. The narrative is detailed but fast-moving, and Eisenhower has brilliantly captured the political mood and the élan of the American and Mexican forces." -- Library Journal. "What interests Mr. Eisenhower is command--how it was exercised in this war, who succeeded and who failed and why. On that subject he writes briskly and authoritatively, and his judgments are worth reading." -- Stephen W. Sears, New York Times Book Review.]

Farcau, Bruce W. The Ten Cents War: Chile, Peru, and Bolivia in the War of the Pacific, 1879-1884. Praeger 2000 [Noted for his work on Latin American mlitary topics, the twenty-year veteran of the Foreign Service now turns his attention to the war between Chile, and allies Peru and Bolivia, for the nitrate rich Atacama Desert. The war was fought with new technology weapons which allowed the Chilean army to crush its opponents, but the conflict dragged on as a guerrilla war. The war ranged widely over burning desert and in snow-clogged mountain passes with altitudes of 15,000 feet. It was all for naught as the nitrate market soon evaporated.]

Flipper, Henry Ossian. The Colored Cadet at West Point: Autobiography of Lieutenant Henry Ossian Flipper, U.S.A. [Quintard Taylor, Jr., new intro.; Blacks in the American West Series] Univ. of Nebraska Pr. 1998 [This work recounts the life of West Point's first black graduate (Class of '77) and the hardships and isolation he endured at the USMA. He went on to serve in the West as a cavalry officer. Court-martialed and dismissed in 1882, Flipper however chalked up numerous accomplisments in the American West and elsewhere. He was a surveyor, cartographer, civil and mining engineer, interpreter, translator, historian, inventor, newspaper editor, a special agent for the Justice department, an aide to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and a consultant to the Secretary of the Interior. Later he was hired by William F. Buckley, Sr. to work for Pantepec Oil Company and in that capacity helped Venezuela develop its oil resources. Glover, Michael. Rorke's Drift. [Wordsworth Military Library] Wordsworth Editions (UK) 1997/Combined Books (US) 1998 [orig. 1975.]

Hackett, R.G. South African War Books: An Illustrated Bibliography. Primrose Hill (UK) 1994/Combined Books (US) 1998 [This is a comprehensive guide to the literature emanating from the Boer up to 1920. The highlight of Hackett's effort is the more than 200 reproductions of book covers and title pages. Many are in color, and they are nicely reproduced in large photographs in this oversized hardcover printed on high-quality glossy paper (however this substantially drives up the book's price). Although I enjoyed going through this book, given its steep price I'm afraid it will be of interest only to serious military bibliophiles and Boer War historians. More information can be found in our review in Paper Wars magazine, Issue #32.]

Hardin, Stephen L. Texian Iliad: A Military History of the Texas Revolution. Univ. of Texas Pr. 1996 [Originally published in 1994, this fine history is illustrated with photographs, and drawings by Gary S. Zaboly. The hardcover is still available from Amazon.com.]

Harrigan, Stephen. The Gates of the Alamo. Penguin 2001 [This novel about individuals caught up in the dramatic war for Texas and the legendary Battle of the Alamo has proven immensely popular as witnessed by its sitting on the New York Times bestseller list. ". . . a remarkable blending of historical framework and fictional narrative. After years of painstaking research, Stephen Harrigan has crafted a story that has the ring of authenticity, stripping away much of the romanticism that has always encrusted the Alamo story, yet revealing the far greater drama of fact-based storytelling. Thanks to the author's synthesis of the latest and most authoritative Alamo research, readers will learn more about the real story of the Alamo from this book than from many of the histories that have appeared over the years, and yet be treated to a compelling human story at the same time. That is a rare achievement, and one surely destined to draw a host of readers through The Gates of the Alamo." -- William C. Davis. "So deft in richly authentic detail that it's easy to forget this is a deeply imagined yarn. . . . A picturesque historical saga comparable to Lonesome Dove and The Killer Angels . . . a new masterpiece in the literature of fact." -- Christian Science Monitor. "A time and a place, a vanished world in which gallant death and honor still held tangible appeal, while merciless slaughter was more likely the rule, are evoked with great skill." -- Robert Houston, The New York Times Book Review. "Following the examples of novelists like Cormac McCarthy and Larry McMurtry . . . a genuinely moving epic and, paradoxically, yet another unforgettable Alamo." -- Newsweek. "The first great novel of the 21st century. . . . This is storytelling at its finest." -- Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "As with all mythologized chronicles . . . the Battle of the Alamo ultimately resolves into mundane fact, a catalog of human error, ego, and heroism. And it is these details that Stephen Harrigan regards in [this] broad and powerful third novel. . . . [It] sweeps us into the many and variegated smaller stories that compose the larger one. It's a book to remember." -- Ben Guterson, Amazon.com. "Harrigan builds slowly and surely toward the story's inevitable, impressive climax, examining in thrilling detail his several protagonists' quests for both freedom and fulfillment. . . . An original work of high distinction indeed: as fine a historical novel as any within recent memory, and far and away Harrigan's best book yet." -- Kirkus Reviews, (starred). ". . . Harrigan [has] emerged as the leading Texan writer of his generation and an American writer of the first rank." -- San Francisco Chronicle. "Riveting. . . . The strength of Harrigan's extraordinarily authentic novel is in its superior storytelling." -- The Washington Post. "Harrigan retells the story of the Alamo with consummate skill, weaving a wealth of historical detail into a tight, moving human drama. . . .[He] has crafted a compulsively readable historical drama on a grand scale, peopled with highly believable frontier personalities--Mexican as well as American--and suffused with period authenticity." -- Publishers Weekly, (starred review). "What Harrigan has done so well in this, his latest novel, is to re-create the Texas of the early nineteenth century and to put the conflict in human terms by vividy characterizing real and fictional characters who were involved on both sides of the Texas struggle to separate itself from its mother country. . . . [R]eaders are made privy to a heart-stopping, realistic depiction of the Battle of the Alamo. But the battle section is characteristic of all the scenes in the book, which build to an artful depiction of a certain time and place." -- Brad Hooper, Booklist, January 1, 2000. "The Gates of the Alamo is a crackerjack good read. A moving story of ordinary human beings caught up in extraordinary events . . . In the final analysis, The Gates of the Alamo is as good a novel about the Texas Revolution and its most famous incident as has ever been published by anyone." -- Texas Observer. ""For all readers, not merely historians or others fascinated by the heroics of the story. It deserves a place among the best books ever written about this legendary battle."" -- Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "Although fiction, The Gates of the Alamo joins that short shelf of works deserving permanent use when searching for the everyday events behind the myths and legends of that enormous time -- a time involving not just that handful of persons within the Alamo mission walls, but the fate and future of three nations. The author has done a remarkable job of making us part of those tense, fearful and uncertain days when the defenders of the fabled place had to make life or death decisions while undergoing constant bombardment and conflicting rumors of rescue. The immortal question is: did they stay out of bravado or out of hopeful expectation? Stephen Harrigan gives considered answers which add real dimensions to this outsized history that has become part of the world's vocabulary." -- A. C. Greene. Hughes, Daniel J., ed. Moltke on the Art of War: Selected Writings. Presidio Pr. 1995 [Selected writings on the art of war from one of military history's greatest geniuses, Helmuth Graf von Moltke, are ably compiled in this valuable work. Von Moltke's abilities were obvious in the way that he translated von Clausewitz's theories into battlefield victories and brought offensive warfare into the industrial age. He also created the modern general staff system. Yet von Moltke was not only a man of action, he was also a great thinker and writer. He emphasized the primacy of battle, and the need for flexibility and individual initiative by subordinates (oft referred to as Auftragstaktik). The selections discuss the nature of war, the relationship of war and politics, and the conduct of war. This book is strongly recommended for von Moltke not only laid the foundation for Prussian/German military thought, he decisively influenced modern military theory. His impact on American military thinking persists, especially in various military staff college curricula.]

(US) 2001 [This book is part of Pen & Sword's wonderful Battleground Series. Books in this series do two things very well. First, they give a great introduction to a battle (or portion of battle) with adequate text describing the battle and putting it in its larger context. A good selection of illustrations and plenty of clear maps support the text. Secondly, these books are meant to be taken by the visitor to the battlefield. Text tells one how to get to and tour the battlefield and photos are marked with troop movements and the identity of notable landmarks. The books also come with bibliographies and indices.]

The author examines the development of its organization, doctrine, and strategy in the aftermath of Russia's defeat in the Crimean War through the wars against Turkey in 1877-1878 and Japan in 1904-1905 up to the eve of World War One. His multifaceted work is also a model of how military historians should look at the development of the armed forces of any country." -- War in History. "I can recommend no better guide to understanding the contours of today's Russian military crisis then this book about that institution's grandparent. . . . This is a startlingly timely work of history." -- Military Review. ". . . brilliant synthesis of the evolution of the Russian army in a critical half century." -- Journal of Military History. Morris, Donald R. The Washing of the Spears: The Rise and Fall of the Zulu Nation. [Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, intro.] Da Capo Pr. 1998 [Originally published in 1965, one of the finest studies of the Zulu nation is again in print. We will feature this book in an upcoming column in Paper Wars magazine. In the meantime, here are some other comments: "The book to end all books on the tragic confrontation between the assegai and the Gatling gun. . . . Colorful, yet commendably fair." -- Times Literary Supplement "Particularly valuable. . . . vivid and accurate, enthusiastic yet detached, and blessedly free from moral indignation for or against either side. . . . [A] real achievement. Morris has managed to combine much serious historical research into a readable and lively narrative." -- New York Times Book Review. "Morris is at his best in the description of battles, the scenes of which he obviously visited. His style is consistently crisp and his judgments of controversial men and events seem fair and reasoned. . . . The definitive account of the Zulu nation. An amazing book. . . . [A] masterpiece of readable scholarship." -- Washington Post Book World. "Morris handles narrative with ease, and is evidently incapable of being dull. Hemingway would have relished his vigorous way of bringing history to life." -- London Times. "The encroachments and collisions of Dutch, English, and Zulus are expounded with clarity, liveliness, and sporadic explosions of mordant humor. I was bewitched by the book." -- Atlantic. "Without question, the definitve work on the subject." -- New York Herald Tribune.]

Meyerson, Harvey. Nature's Army: When Soldiers Fought for Yosemite. [Development of Western Resources Series] Univ. Pr. of Kansas 2001 [This is a rather different take on military history. It chronicles the U.S. Army's role as a constabulary force in Yosemite, America's first national park, from 1890 until the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916. He goes on to elaborate how the "Old Army" governed the Yosemite and protected the natural resources. They built many of the trails and roads still being used today. The Army guarded against encrouchment from homesteaders and ranchers, and they proved tenacious in tracking various trespassers through the rugged terrain. It provided a role model for the future park rangers to such an extent that they still wear khaki uniforms. And part of the early Sierra Club's most ardent membership was drawn from members of the cavalry who had served in Yosemite. "Compelling and well written, this is a superb contribution to both military history and the history of environmentalism and the West." -- Russell F. Weigley. "A lively, readable, and, for many, surprising story. These army officers not only rigorously carried out their task of protecting Yosemite but, in the process, demonstrated a clear understanding of and genuine sensitivity to the environment." -- Edward M. Coffman. ". . . a lively account of a little known chapter in American history." -- Publishers Weekly. "A major contribution to our understanding of preservation efforts in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries." -- Donald J. Pisani. "Unravels the mystery of how the U.S. Army came to work with the Sierra Club to lay the foundations for Yosemite National Park and the National Park Service. . . . A gripping, probing, and enjoyable story." -- Michael McCloskey, former chairman, Sierra Club. "A wonderful read with heroes on every page." -- MGen. Bill Nash, USA (Ret.)]

Perrett, Bryan. Gunboat!: Small Ships at War. [Cassell Military Paperbacks] Cassell 2001 [This book covers twelve gunboat action from the Crimean war up through the escape of the HMS Amethyst from Chinese communists in 1949. Although most of the actions stem from British colonial operations, they are quite varied. For example, there are chapters on the Crimea, the Second Opium War, piracy suppression in the East Indies and the South China Sea, the Gordon Relief Expedition, the Second Sudan War, German East Africa (WW I), the Mesopotamian Campaign (WW I), gunboat operations between the wars, and the Mediterranean during WW II. One chapter is devoted to Federal and Confederate gunboat actions on the Mississippi during the American Civil War, and the epilogue discusses US riverine operations in Vietnam. This book was originally published in 2000.]

Remini, Robert V. The Battle of New Orleans. Penguin 2001 ["The leading Andrew Jackson scholar, Robert V. Remini, has produced a short, and colorful, account of the United States first major land victory in The Battle of New Orleans. With Jackson's energetic efforts and characters like the pirate Laffite brothers in support, the offensive of the proud British General Pakenham, which was intended to seize the Lower Mississippi, was smashed. Well worth reading, I only wish it included a map of the Creek War which Remini discusses in setting the battle's context." -- Fritz Heinzen, Paper Wars magazine. "This is an exceptional book that combines impressive scholarship with a riveting narrative." -- Carlo D'Este, The New York Times Book Review. "The Battle of New Orleans is a gem of a book, perfectly formed and beautifully written. Robert Remini, our greatest scholar of the Jacksonian era, has admirably recreated one of the most important events in American military history, a victory that helped define our nationality." -- David Herbert Donald. ". . . Remini's narrative of the encounter at New Orleans brings alive a remarkable feat of American arms in a war the nation has forgotten. The award-wining dean of Early American History skillfully reveals the extraordinary generalship of Andrew Jackson. Remini keeps us turning the pages as the American 'dirty shirts' under the Tennessee hero's command subdued the proud British regiments fresh from Napoleonic victories." -- Bertram Wyatt-Brown, National Humanities Center. "Superbly written, fast-paced account of one of America's most significant but little-remembered military victories." -- Forbes. ". . . Remini's panorama is a top-notch rendition from a practiced historical hand." -- Gilbert Taylor, Booklist, August 19, 1999. "This concise book, full of workmanlike prose, is a fine introduction to what Remini calls "America's first military victory" (he downplays Saratoga and Yorktown as "simply surrenders, nothing more"). Military history buffs won't want to miss it." -- John J. Miller, Amazon.com. Originally published by Viking in 1999, this book is still available in a hardcover edition.]

The sound of gunfire and the smoke of battle filters through almost every page." -- Nathan Miller. "[The] most enduring of Roosevelt's 38 books. . . . remains the definitive work in its field. . . . A classic of naval history." -- Edmund Morris. "An excellent book in every respect, and shows in so young an author the best promises for a good historian. It shows fearlessness of statement, caution, endevour to be impartial, and a brisk and interesting way of telling events." -- New York Times. "[A] first-class study, scrupulously fair. . . . No sudent of the period can ignore it even today." -- Henry F. Pringle. "The most accurate, the most cool and impartial, and in some respects the most intrepid account that has yet appeared." -- Harper's. Silverstone, Paul H. The Sailing Navy, 1775-1854. [The U.S. Navy Warship Series] Naval Institute Pr. 2001 [This is the first book in a series by the noted naval historian. He assembles all relevant data on American ships from the American Revolution and the Quasi-War through combat against the Barbary pirates, the War of 1812, and the Mexican War. Ships on Lakes Champlain, Ontario, and Erie are listed separately. Ships of the Revenue Cutter Service, Texas Navy, and the first U.S. Navy steam vessels are also included in this book. The data is presented in a tabular form and covers size, date, location of construction, commissioning date and length of service, other names the ship used while in merchant marine or other service, and the ship's fate. Further details include campaigns and actions fought, damages sustained, casualties, prizes taken, and ships sunk. "Paul Silverstone has again produced invaluable ship guides in this new series that includes Civil War Navies, 1855-1883. No other volumes provide as much useful data and commentary in easy-to-use formats. They are a must for the historian and ship buff." -- Norman Polmar. "This new U.S. Navy warship series will provide a needed tool primarily for the naval researcher and historian and secondly for the naval buff. Paul Silverstone is well qualified for this work. His abaility and knowledge of naval affairs and history have proven invaluable." -- Allan Harris. "Much but certainly not all of the information in this book is already available, but it is scattered in various places and formats. This first volume in the series makes an especially valuable contribution because there is no other good source for early sailing ships." -- James L. George. "Everyone interested in American sailing ships will want a copy of this book close at hand. Silverstone is thorough, covering every vessel built or pressed into service for the United States over an eighty-year period. It is the most comprehensive guide on the subject ever published." -- James C. Bradford.]

Skaggs, David Curtis & Gerald T. Altoff. A Signal Victory: The Lake Erie Campaign, 1812-1813. [Bluejacket Books Series] Naval Institute Pr. 2000 [This book presents a new examination of the campaign best known for the Battle of Lake Erie (10 September 1813), where the U.S. Navy defeated the Royal Navy leading to the surrender of the entire British squadron. It was at this battle that the American commander, Oliver Hazard Perry, uttered his immortal words, "We have met the enemy and they are ours." This work won the North American Society for Oceanic History's John Lyman Book Award. "Undoubtedly will become the standard source on this interesting and important campaign." -- American Historical Review. "An excellent recounting of the conflict to control Lake Erie in 1812 and 1813." -- Nautical Research Journal. "Numerous personal sketches enliven this study, and the important but under-documented contributions of Indians and Blacks are recognized. . . . Altogether this is a well-executed book and a valuable contribution to War of 1812 literature." -- New York History. ". . . a detailed account of this great sea battle, which was one of the few events during the War of 1812 that Americans of the time could celebrate. A series of helpful maps shows how ship positions changed on an hour-by-hour basis, and the text provides strategic context and a blow-by-blow description of the encounter. A Signal Victory is a skillful piece of American naval history." -- Amazon.com. Originally published by the Naval Institute Press in 1997, this book is still available in a hardcover edition.]
