This card kit of the USS Monitor is displayed atop the National Geographic article showing the wreckage of the warship located in 1973. The Monitor was built by the Union Navy in response to the impending launch of the CSS Virginia by the Confederacy. The famous "battle between the ironclads" was the first of it's kind and launched ironclad design programs for both the North and the South during the American Civil War. This kit when assembled is 11 3/16" long and is a perfect school project along with her rival the CSS Virginia.
