Devil's Cornfield

Devil's Cornfield

Two views from the Devil's Cornfield along both sides of State Route 190, a few miles east of Stovepipe Wells. Perspective at top is looking northeast across the "cornfield" to Corkscrew Peak (tallest peak, upper center of image) in the Grapevine Mountains; at bottom is the view southwest to the base of the Panamint Range. The Devil's Cornfield derives its name from a species of arroweed whose former roots have been exposed as the ground subsided around them. Abundant ground water just below the surface keeps the arroweed thriving here in the midst of extraordinarily harsh conditions.
