September 2008
Felt more like July, but we managed to get through 6 stages
in pretty quick time in September’s match. There was only one “moving “stage,
which was probably just as well with the temperature in the 90’s. Stages were a
little on the complex side (didn’t seem that way when I wrote them, but some
that I thought would be simple had some confusion while others I thought might
be a problem went smoothly. Who knows?) Nevertheless, most shooters did OK
with them. Other category winners were: Duelist: Smokey Hill Thompson Senior Duelist: Cash Caldwell Classic Cowboy: Letort Lawman B-Western: Red Eyed Kid Elder Statesman: Church Key Silver Senior: Bird Dog Jake Frontier Cartridge: Tucker Ladies’ 49er: Misfire Maggie Clean matches were shot by: Slowpoke John Herd Tender Highlander Thanks to Hired Gun, Sgt Hochbauer, Morgan James, and Highlander for coming to the set up with me. Things went quickly (which was good as it started to rain while we were painting.) (If I forgot someone, forgive me. I lost the paper that I wrote the names on to compensate for my increasingly marginal memory.) A few business note: Safety: Our sport in general, and our club in particular, has an extremely good record for safety. Our club has had no significant injuries since its inception, and I believe that SASS claims a similar record. This isn’t by accident. We have been shooting with smaller posses lately, and that makes it all the more important that everyone pitches in so that we can spot, score, time, pick up brass and watch the loading/unloading tables. Particularly the unloading table can be managed by a dedicated watcher, or by the last shooter waiting to watch the shooter behind him. But we have to do something, we can’t just let it unsupervised. Cross draw shooters are reminded that for drawing and reholstering they must turn far enough that their muzzle does not break the 170 with respect to the firing line. Also, holsters should not cant more than 30o from the vertical. Leadership: As mentioned at the match, I have decided to step down as President of the club. I still intend to help wherever I can, but the commitment of President is no longer compatible with my home life. I’ve done this for about 6 years, and while I’ve had great support from the membership and especially from our other Board members, time considerations have reached a breaking point for me. (For example, I haven’t had time to shoot at another club since I shot at Ickesburg in 2006!) Therefore, at our January meeting we will be looking for nominations to fill that spot, as well as for anyone who wishes to run against our current Vice President, Treasurer, and Match Results Coordinator. The duties of the President involve participating in the running of the club, as well as match writing (typically half the year’s matches), and attending our shoots to officiate. It doesn’t take a lot of time overall, but your second weekends are pretty much blocked in from March to November. Think about it. October will be our annual 1911 match, written by Smoky Hill Thompson. Be reminded that if you want to use your cowboy guns, that is just fine. 1911 will be shot as an additional class. As always, if anyone wishes to write a match, please let me know. You would be more than welcome to do a match at some time, and Smoky and I would be glad to assist you. Hope to see you all next month. Until then, Your pard, Doc Hornaday
Westshore Posse 1911 Shoot Guidelines 1911 Pistol Requirements: * Standard single action 1911 Government model pistol having fixed or conventional adjustable sights, a 4-inch or longer barrel and fire .45-caliber ammunition. * A minimum of 2 magazines capable of holding 5 rounds. *Period 1911ish holster capable of securely holding 1911 pistol. Special instructions for folks using a 1911 pistol: * While pistol is holstered behind the shooting line, the hammer will be lowered and no magazine will be inserted into the magazine well. * Prior to each stage, magazines will be loaded at the loading table under the supervision of the loading table officer. Magazines will be loaded with no more than five rounds. A magazine will then be inserted into the pistol and the pistol will be holstered. The pistol will be carried to the firing line in the holster with the hammer down on an empty chamber and then made ready on the firing line during the stage (on the clock). * When the stage begins (on the clock), the shooter will draw the pistol and cycle the slide when it is time for the first pistol target to be shot. If there is a split pistol stage (pistols not shot back to back), the 1911 shooter, after shooting the first and second set of pistol targets, will eject the magazine, and stage the pistol with the slide locked. Any loaded magazine dropped during a stage is dead and may not be retrieved. * After shooting the entire stage, the 1911 shooter will show the RO that the pistol is clear, make the pistol safe and holster it. He will then go to the unloading table and clear the rifle and shotgun per standard methods. The 1911 shooter and the unloading table officer will verify that the 1911 pistol is empty, the magazine is removed, the slide is released and the hammer is lowered in a safe manner. If any empty magazines are dropped during a stage, they will be retrieved by somebody other than the 1911 shooter and returned to the 1911 shooter at the unloading table. * Do not expect all brass that is ejected from the 1911 to be recovered at the end of the stage. This is the nature of the beast.

(SASS) . The WESTSHORE POSSE is a SASS affiliated club. WESTSHORE POSSE JANUARY 2008 MINUTES Meeting was called to order on January 13, 2008 at 10:36 A M by Doc Hornaday. A quorum was present. We dispensed with the reading of the 2007 minutes. Treasury report was given and approved. Even after our March match being rained out our treasury balance ended in the black this year. The bank we deal with has been bought out and charges no fee for a checking account. OLD BUSINESS: Our props still have not been replaced at the Rocky Gorge. We are told that West Shore Sportsmen’s Association are having a work party in February and will be putting our props back up on the right side of the range. The Posse Officers would like
to THANK everyone who came out and helped with set-up and tear downs during our
2007 shooting season. Election of Officers took place: Highlander nominated Doc Hornaday for President, City Slicker seconded the motion. Motion carried. Doc Hornaday nominated Highlander for Vice President, Letort Lawman seconded the motion. Motion carried. Doc Hornaday nominated Smoky Hill Thompson for Treasurer, Letort Lawman seconded the motion. Motion carried. Doc Hornaday nominated Chester Young for Match Results and Club Liaison, City Slicker seconded the motion. Motion carried. Letort Lawman nominated Hired Gun for Territorial Governor, Cactus Charlie seconded the motion. Motion carried. No one volunteered to run for Secretary, which is now an open position. The posse will continue to set up two stages on one lane. Everyone seems to like that concept and it does make it easier for set-up and tear down. We will be shooting 6 stages each month with the exception of July and August when we will be shooting 5 stages due to the heat. The Posse’s 1911 match will be held in October. Discussion took place regarding the rules to follow during that match. Highlander made a motion for us to follow the SASS ammo rules, Shendo Kid seconded the motion. Motion carried. Misty Rose will call the food vendor about coming out to our 2008 matches. The West Shore Sportsmen’s Association has initiated a new Temporary Membership policy. Everyone who is not a WSSA member will have to fill out a Temporary Membership form every time they are on the property attending a shooting event. A copy of the Temporary Membership must be with you while on the property for the match and does not carry over after the match ends. This Temporary Membership form is only for sporting use. You will not need to fill out a form for set-up or posse meetings. After your first match attendance the posse will have the form prepared waiting for your signature and date at the remaining matches you attend. There is a $1.00 fee for this temporary membership which will be paid by the Westshore Posse. The Westshore Posse will be your Sponsor. Fred had no influence on initiating this temporary membership. With this new WSSA Temporary Membership policy in place, City Slicker asked would the posse be required to continue carrying their own liability insurance. Smoky Hill Thompson stated that SASS requires us to carry the policy. The posse will check into this question further. Chester Young will acquire a copy of WSSA’s liability insurance to see if we need to continue carrying our own policy. April 12, 2008, 9 A M will be a posse work day and set-up day. Bring out your chain saws and tools to disassemble props. WSSA has given us permission to dispose of all materials into the roll off that will be on the property at that time. The Westshore posse has asked other clubs if they were interested in any of the props that we do not use. The other clubs have no need for them. Whitefish Willie has volunteered to make repairs to the stage coach. The suggestion was made to use a pocket pistol or long range rifle every now and again on one of our monthly match stages. The posse officers are reluctant to have a house gun in use. It was stated that using a side match firearm in a monthly match should be at the discression of the stage/match writer. If anyone wants to write stages and run a match, give the stages to Doc Hornaday or Smoky Hill Thompson to look over the stages for safety protocol. Under the West Shore Sportsmen’s Association new by-laws a Range Useage Committee was created. WSSA wants a representative from each club. Highlander will be the posse representative. The Westshore Posse has donated $500.00 to the West Shore Sportsmen’s Association. Meeting adjourned at 11:48 A M. Respectfully submitted, Philadelphia Misty Rose Posse Secretary
