ABORTION
Okay, I realize that no one bothers to discuss this topic any more, since they're all sick of fighting with each other about it. But I personally think that we could eliminate some of the disagreement if we cleared up a little misconception about the definition of Pro-Choice.
Now, if someone says they're Pro-Life, it's obvious what they mean; they're against abortion. But the meaning of Pro-Choice isn't always that obvious. Some people make the mistake of thinking that Pro-Choice is the same as Pro-Abortion. This is not, not, not true.
Pro-Choice means that you advocate a woman's right to decide for herself if an abortion is necessary. This is a sticky issue; instead of advocating one truth for all people, it advocates the people's right to decide for themself which truth they prefer. Pro-Choice legislation still gives people the option to be Pro-Life; and it also gives a woman the right to decide. But unhappily, there are still those of you out there ( and you know who you are) who think you know the Grand Truth, and you're going to make everyone else believe it if you have to cram it down their throat in the process.
Abortion *is* a very sad thing. It should never be a form of birth control. But no one should deny that when you're young, single, poor and raped, sometimes abortion is your only option. When you've already had several children, and having another is a serious threat to your health, sometimes abortion is your only option.
Ani diFranco sings and writes about abortion, sexism, and real stuff like that. Read the song lyrics to Lost Woman Song, or the poem Tiptoe, both by Ani diFranco.
