MY* W0RLD |
Welcome to my world. Online, I go by the name of Whitestar*. I live in Olympia, Washington. I'm going to the local community college for lack of anything better to do. But really, my main occupations are writing poetry, drinking coffee, and smoking too many cigarettes (Marlboro regular box). I drive a Ford. I have two cats. I'm nocturnal. I'm a diehard feminist, especially with music (ani difranco, tori amos, liz phair, indigo girls, etc.) I read a lot of books, really fast, and it takes me a long time to return them to the library. Basically, I'm a burden on society. If you care about that sort of thing, you can see what I look like on this page, as well as see pictures of my friends and family. I don't do much worth mentioning, unless of course you count creating and maintaining webpages for the greater good of the World Wide Web. :::::ahem, clears throat and steps onto soapbox:::::::::: My philosophy on webpages is pretty simple and based around a few major principles, these being
1 - Don't waste FTP space by putting up a site that provides content that is *already available* on countless other sites. Be original. Be unique. Be anything but redundant.
2 - Don't use an overabundance of graphics per page- the loading time becomes ridiculous when you've got upwards of 30 images and that's just the menu. Most people are going to give up and go elsewhere if you try their patience. The whole point of maintaining a webpage is to provide useful content (remember that whole Information Highway thing?) not a lot of eye candy.
3 - Don't make people sign user agreements, become members, log in with passwords, subscribe to newsletters, and download upgrades just so they can get past your welcome page - just let them in. (Remember that whole point and click thing?) All the content in the world does your page no good if visitors can't find what they're looking for and give up. If your page is easy to use, they're more likely to use it... and come back.
So, now that you have a firm grasp on what I *don't* like about webpage design, take a look at what I've done with my own pages. (Warning: blatant self-advertising to follow. Wear protective gear and have a nice day.)
Drum roll please, my pages are, as follows;
I also created this page, which is for i - a literary magazine ~ i was my high school's lit mag, and I made this website for it my senior year. The page is somewhat outdated though, being as I lost touch after graduation and whatnot. From what I hear, though, i is still alive and well, so I guess that shows how crucial and important I was as a member of the staff.
Variety is the spice of life. Visit all five sites and get more bang for your bytes. I depend on you, gentle reader, for complimentary commentary and/or creative criticism.
Thanks and Blessed Be.
