THE TONGVA
( in construction)
The name " Tongva " has recently been accepted for the Shoshonean
peoples who started their settlement of the Los Angeles region around
500 A.D.
" Tongva" is close to the Uto-Aztecan word for " The World " or known "
Existance ". It alse is interpreted to include " The Humans ."
The main language spoke in the basin was a Uto-Aztecan Shoshonean
tongue. A Language with antecedents to the Aztec empire and ancient
Mexico via the travelers and hunting societies of the Great Plains. The
language was as close to that of the Aztec and plains Comanche as
English to Yiddish through Middle English and Saxon German. If you
listened carefully, you could pick out words and ideas. You would see a
kinship.
The names of many peoples throughout this hemisphere also translate as "
The Humans ." It wasn't so much a rejection of all others, as an affirmation of their cohesion. Zest, more than xenophobia.
For at least 1,000 years, the Tongva, along with their relatives, the
Tatavium, Modoc, Ippi-Tapai, along with the Chumash, had a stable,
pluralistic life with relative peace and plenty.
During the time of the Crusades, The plagues and famines, the empires of
the Khans and Ottomans, the building of the Spanish and British empires,
the Tongva picked their acorns and berries, ate their fish and rabbits,
danced with their honeys and told stories with their long-term, friendly
trading partners in a dozen languages. There were droughts, earthquakes,
floods and problems, but compared to anywhere else, the land of the
Tongva was kind and peaceful.
