Zippo Collectibles of the Year
In 1992 Zippo produced a special commemorative
lighter in a collectible tin for the company's 60th Anniversary. The
lighter has a Midnight Chrome finish (first production of this finish) with
a pewter 60th Anniversary emblem attached to the face. The lighter
was produced in limited quatities, produced for only that year. Customer
response was so great to the special lighter and related tin that Zippo decided
to continue to produce limited edition lighters and tins from that year
forward. Approx. 350,000 of these lighters were produced
in 1992.
The 1993 Collectible of the Year is the 1935
Varga Girl "Windy". The lighter is a high polished chrome with a pewter
"Windy" attached to both the lid and body of the Zippo. The lid of
the tin shows a reproduction of how the world first came to know "Windy".
In 1937 Zippo ran it's first advertisement in the December issue of
Esquire magazine. (See ad on right) Approx. 450,000 of these sets were
produced in 1993.
1994 saw the 50th Anniversary of D-Day.
Zippo has reproduced it's black crackle lighter ,first seen during
WWII due to shortages in brass and chrome ,and attached an antique brass
emblem patterned after the sleeve patch worn by the Allied troops.
The tin has the same emblem on the cover. The inside cover has General
Dwight Eisenhower's inspirational June 6, 1944 message to the troops
reprinted.
In 1997 Zippo celebrated another anniversary.
Sixty five years and still going strong. The lighter is a 1937
replica in high polished chrome with an art deco pewter emblem attached to
the face. The emblem shows the several styles of the Zippo logo
used over the years. The tin has an embossed emblem that copies the one seen
on the lighter. It also shows many other styles of the Zippo logo.
