In Search Of The Mangiaracina/Sacco Families
We know that the Mangiaracina family originated somewhere
in the Belice Valley. That a root or a branch of the tree was transplanted from either
Santa Margherita di Belice, Sambuca, Menfi or one of the other villages in this area.
It is believed that the first Mangiaracina appeared in
Camporeale sometime during the late 18th century. We base this on a marriage record
dated in the year 1786 between one Giuseppe Mangiaracina and Antonina Sanzone, both of
Santa Margherita di Belice.
The Sacco family appears in Camporeale sometime in the
early 19th Century. This is based on a marriage record between Calogero Sacco and
Dorotea Rizzuto in 1819. This is not to say that Calogero was the first Sacco in
Camporeale. No. It is believed that his family had already established roots
in Camporeale. But we have no record of exactly when.
The Sacco name originated in Verona, Italy. This name
was adopted by the Guidotti family of Bergamo. In the 13th Century, they changed their
name to Sacco, taking it from the locale in Verona where they lived. The area was a bend
in the Adige River outside the city walls. At this particular location, the river twists
and takes the shape of a Sack or Sacco. They took this feature of the river as their
family name: "SACCO". This is a highly honorable and respected family in Verona.
The name Sacco is diffused throughout Italy and Sicily.
Whether or not the Sacco's of Sicily are descented from the Sacco's of Verona is unknown.
According to Professor Titta LoJacono del Istituto
Internazionale di Cultura Ebraica, Palermo/Salemi, in his history of the Jews in Sicily,
states that the Sacco's of Sicily are of Jewish origin.
That Sacco is the Latinization of the name Isaac. That this
name is found among 163 Jewish/Sicilian names. Originally the name was Sacconus, which
derives from the Latin, Busacca, which is the Arab/Hebrew of Isaac used in Sicily.
With the Latinization of Christian sur-names the Jewish
Sicilian sur-name Busacca returned to its Jewish root of Sacconus or Da Sacco, where
"Da" serves perhaps to minimize the Jewish origins of the name.
