These entries were extracted from the draft 5th edition of "Books of the Black Bass." All of the books listed here, with a couple of exceptions, are devoted to taking Bass on the flyrod. The exceptions are books which also include other fish . I felt they were important enough to include them on my list. I hope you find something of interest.

There's something about a bass bug that does things to a bass. Bugs make them
mad." Excellent coverage by a fellow who is considered one of the top fly
fishermen of all time by many. This was Brooks first book.

CHAPA, RAY - How To Fly Fish The Texas Hill Country. 8vo. 47 pages. 1999. Lefty Ray's Fly Casting Service. San Antonio TX. Softcover. Covers all the fish in The Hill Country but has more about Bass than the others. Sections on both Guadalupe and Largemouth with mention of Smallmouth and Spotted Bass. Author says the Priddy book was the "Where" and this is the "How." see: Bud Priddy below.
CLOUSER, BOB with JAY NICHOLS – Fly-Fishing for Stream Smallmouth: in Rivers and Streams. 4to. xiv, 226 pages. 2007. Stackpole Books. Mechanicsburg PA. Profusely illustrated with color photos. Author covers the Natural History of Smallmouth, along with range, spawning behavior, feeding habits, and seasonal movement patterns. Includes coverage of the flies that author uses and how he fishes them. There is also a section on flies that Bob has created for Smallmouth along with other flies he uses complete with tying patterns. CORDES, RON & GARY LAFONTAINE - Pocket Guide to Fly Fishing for Largemouth Bass. 32mo. Pages not numbered (26 pages including inside covers, which contain text). 1999. Greycliff Publishing Co. Helena MT. Black & white illustrations by Kirk Botero. One of a series of over 20 books, 10 of which are about fishing. The Pocket Guides are printed on plastic, spiral bound, and have subject tabs on each page to make it easier to quickly find information. In addition to fishing, the Guides cover such subjects as outdoor photography, emergency first aid, emergency car maintenance, outdoor survival, golf, canoeing, archery, hiking/backpacking, animal tracks, and safe baby sitting.
EGGLER, TOM - Fishing Popping Bugs for Bass & Panfish. A Guide
For The Beginning Fisherman. 8vo. 28 pages including both front and back soft
covers which are numbered. 1987(c). The Gaines Co. Gaines PA. Illustrated with
black and white drawings by Bob Varley. Includes how-to information on using
bugs with fly rods, spinning gear or a canepole. Several pages on popping bug
designs. Four pages devoted to using popping bugs for Bass. Back cover includes
a history of the Gaines Co. which was purchased in 1971 from Russell and Bina
Garlick by Tom and Lael Eggler.
ELLIS, JACK - Bassin' With A Fly Rod: One Fly Rodder's Approach to
Serious Bass Fishing. 8vo. 197 pages. 1994(c). Mountain Pond Publishing Co.
North Conway NH. Illustrated in black and white by Larry Largay. Includes much
on the history of fly-fishing for the Largemouth Bass over the past 100 years
or so. He spends some time with other Bass writers and attempts to compare
their concepts and disagreements. Fly-fishing East Texas but with methods that
should work anywhere. Includes a bibliography of Bass books, which is unusual.
Most fly-fishing Bass books reference trout books instead of digging into the
rich history of Black Bass literature.

FAUST, WILLIAM F. - Fly-Fishing the Gulf Coastal Streams. 8vo. 198
pages. 1970. Carlton Press. NY. This description comes from J. R. Adams'
catalog, "Excellent historical perspective on fly fishing streams from
Louisiana through Florida for bass and panfish, with much on the pioneers of
the sport and the patterns, plus special boats used." Until I saw a copy
of this book I didn't realize that it was intended as a bass book by the
author. "The basic purpose of this book is to survey past and present
fly-fishing for bass on certain Gulf Coastal streams." Revised

Covers equipment, techniques, food sources, access, the future of Huron, and includes angler profiles of expert anglers who fish the Huron.
GASQUE, JIM - Bass Fishing, Technique, Tactics, and Tales. 8vo. xiv, 204 pages plus index. 1945. 2nd printing Oct. 45, 3rd printing June 46. Alfred A. Knopf. NY. One of the Borzoi Books for Sportsmen. Illustrated with a full color frontispiece from a painting by Warren E. Guggenheim showing a fly fisherman playing a Bass. Two color plates and some 40 black and white photos. The photos were especially made for this book and show chapter by chapter the same waters discussed by the author. A good book that has been overlooked by many. Includes quite a lot on fly fishing for Bass. "The famous guide of the Big Smokies covers lake and stream bass fishing." (Wetzel) I hadn't listed this one here until Richard Bean reminded me that "the main thrust of the book is bass bug fishing, including construction your own fly rods and fly casting technique." He also suggested I had forgotten the John Alden Knight book and it is listed here now too.
HANLEY, KEN - Fly Fishing Afoot For Western Bass: Exploring The West's Lakes, Rivers, Ponds And Reservoirs. 4to. 54 pages. 1995. Adventures Beyond Publications. Fremont CA. Softbound. Fly fishing for Bass in the West, covers habitat, tackle, technique, and locations. Best Bass fishing areas in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona and Northwestern Mainland Mexico) are described with what to expect in each of the nearly 100 fishing locations. Illustrated with black & white photos and drawings. There is a special section by Dave Whitlock describing his 12 best Bass patterns and those flies are illustrated in color. In addition there are two pages of color photos of flies. Twenty one fly patterns and full recipes with angling tips for each specific fly.

KNIGHT, JOHN ALDEN - Black Bass. 8vo. xix, 200 pages. 1949. Putnams. NY. Illustrated with black and white photos. Also, there are three color plates that feature Bass bugs, hair bugs, and Bass streamers. I have 3 copies of the trade edition each with a different color cover. One is a bright green, which is what I usually see, one is blue, and the other is a blue gray. Books are otherwise identical including leaping Bass on front cover. I have also seen one advertised in a light green cloth. Rick Reiss has a copy in a red cloth binding that is identical to the others. Putnams say they usually mark 2nd editions or printings on the title page. In this case they either forgot to mark them or it could be that they just used whatever cloth was available without regard to color. Color plates by Dr. Edgar Burke. Line drawings and sketches by Harold Bush. Includes quite a bit on fly fishing for Bass. A limited edition of 150 copies was published simultaneously, blue and black buckram divided vertically, gilt Bass on cover, gilt lettering and lures on spine. Numbered and signed with a limitation notice. Knight recognized the knowledge of Jason Lucas and he quotes Lucas several times.
KREH, BERNARD "LEFTY" - Fly Fishing For Bass: Smallmouth, Largemouth, Exotics. 12mo. 144 pages. 1993. Odysseus Editions, Inc. Birmingham AL. The "exotics" are the Peacock Bass, Niugini, and Spottailed Bass. Illustrated in color and black and white. Part of Lefty's Little Library of Fly Fishing. This title is part of a 20 book plus series which was available through subscription, although the publisher told me individual copies were available and he allowed me to purchase this one. Later on the books were available from Palladium Press in the 25 book series but the link I had for their web site no longer works. Soft cover edition by Globe Pequot Press. 143 pages. 2004.

LINDSEY, JOHN – BIG BASS Fly Fishing. 4to. 176 pages. 2006 (more likely 2007). John is currently searching for a publisher. West Linn OR. Author is a popping bug tier and wants to focus on topwater where it is more fun. John also says he already has enough material for another book on big Bass bugs but needs to publish this one first. I’ll stay in touch with him and post any new info here as I receive it.
LIVINGSTON, A. D. - Fly-rodding for Bass. 8vo. 203 pages. 1976. Lippincott. Phila. & NY. Illustrated with over 70 black and white drawings and photos. He notes: "The best reason for using a fly rod is that it will at times catch more bass. That's right. There are times when bugs and flies will outfish hardware and even soft plastic worms. I have proved this, at least to my own satisfaction, on a number of occasions. Why? I believe it is a matter of presenting the lure. Anything cast with spinning or baitcasting gear is likely to splash down in the water. A bug or fly, though, can be made to roll over and sit down quite gently. This delivery is difficult to match with any other casting gear, and it can be deadly on skittish bass in shallow water. I might add that in experienced hands the fly rod is capable of pinpoint accuracy, which can be of extreme importance in bass fishing."

Livingston put out a Bass book a year for four years and each was a little
smaller than the previous one. For three years, beginning in 1977 he published
a tabloid, Bass Fishing News.

PRIDDY, B. L. "BUD" - Fly-Fishing the Texas Hill Country: A
Guide to Fishing & Lodging on Thirteen Texas Rivers. Tall 8vo. 75 pages.
1994. W. Thomas Taylor. Austin TX. Not illustrated. Spiral bound soft cover.
Mentions other fish but is primarily concerned with Black Bass and sunfish. He
says the Largemouth Bass is the prize catch on these streams. Bass available in
the hill country streams are Largemouth, Guadalupe, Spotted, and Smallmouth.
The first three are native species and the Smallmouth has been introduced.
Includes access points to each river and what to expect on that stretch of the
stream. There is also a section on food and lodging for each river. Legal Access
to Rivers was written by David Young and the chapter, Colorado River, is by Joe
Robinson. Revised And Enlarged Edition - 1996. 95 pages plus ads and two
color plates of flies. Tall 8vo, spiral bound soft cover. W.T. Taylor, Inc.

SCIENTIFIC ANGLERS - Fly Fishing For Bass - 4to. 78 pages. 1986. Aqua-Field.
Shrewsbury NJ. Magazine format with ads. Illustrated. I guess after three years
they decided to try a Bass annual one more time. There was also a 1987 issue.

TRYON, CHUCK - 200 Missouri Smallmouth Adventures. 4to. 361 pages. 2001. Ozark Mountain Fly Fishers. Rolla MO. Soft cover bound with a plastic comb. Illustrated with black & white maps and charts. Also black & white drawings of Smallmouth by Al Agnew are scattered throughout the book. More a how-to-get-there than an angling book but should be very helpful to Missouri stream anglers.
Warmwater Fly Fishing, a bi-monthly magazine came along in 1997. It was not devoted to Black Bass but did include them in every issue. Evidently in 2000 the magazine became a quarterly. At the same time the name was changed to Warmwater Fly Fishing for Bass and other species. Publication discontinued in 2000 but the magazines are still out there at auctions, yard sales, etc., for anglers willing to run them down.
WATERMAN, CHARLES - Fly Rodding for Bass. 8vo. 91 pages. 1989. Nick
Lyons Books. New York. One of the Cortland Library Series, a continuing series
sponsored by the Cortland Line Company. An introduction to fly fishing for Bass
and related species. What type of tackle and how to use it, the best flies,
wading or boating. Softbound. Illustrated with black and white photos.
WATERMAN, CHARLES F. - Black Bass and the Fly Rod. 8vo. vii, 248 pages.
1993. Stackpole Books. Harrisburg PA. Illustrated with 30 black and white
photos and 30 line drawings. "Waterman teaches all the tools-rods, reels,
lines, and types of flies and lures-necessary to fly fish for bass. Covers the
rods, reels, lures, and lines used in fly fishing for Bass. Not all how-to
though, Waterman includes historical information throughout the book. Each
chapter is led by a single page quotation on fly fishing that is applicable to
fly fishing for Black Bass. Those quoted include, Dr. Henshall, Ray Bergman,
Lefty Kreh, Joe Brooks, Tom McNally, A. D. Livingston, Paul Schullery, Mary
Orvis Marbury, Joseph D. Bates Jr., David Foster, Harry Murray, Mark Sosin and
Bill Dance, and Jerry Gibbs.
WHITLOCK, DAVE - L. L. Bean Fly Fishing For Bass Handbook. 8vo. xii, 157
pages. 1988. Softbound. Nick Lyons Books. NY. Illustrated by author, also
includes some photos. Author has been researching Bass fly fishing for quite
awhile and we expected a book long before this one. My only regret was the lack
of color plates, Whitlock's art deserves better than black and white.
That was corrected in the revised edition in 2000. Tony Lyons told
me "The book has been colorized and redesigned, but the text remains as it
was." Second Edition. 8vo. xii, 178 pages. 2007. The
WHITLOCK, DAVE - L. L. Bean Fly Fishing For Bass Handbook. 8vo. x, 157 pages. ©1988. Shoei Publishing. Tokyo. Japanese version, translated by Tomonori Higashi. Illustrated with color photos plus color and black & white drawings. Softbound. I didn't check page by page but it appears that the same photos and drawings as in the original book except that many of them are in color instead of black and white.
