Dual Log Setup - Step By Step

Pre-Setup Checklist

1. AC is installed on C:/
2. I've downloaded the latest client.exe and registry files(Files below)
3. I've made sure that "View All Files" is selected in my Folder Options for Windows (You'll need this to see some dll's)
4. I'm *not* an impatient half-monkey that skipped over sections of this page. Reward yourself with a banana if you're reading this.

Ready? Read on =)

1) Copy all files (Other than screenshots) from your Asherons Call directory to a second directory. For example, if your AC directory is: C:/games/AC, then copy all AC files in that folder to: C:/games/AC/AC2. From this point on, I'll talk about "Your main AC directory" [This is your current AC directory] and "Your second AC directory" [This is the directory you just created]

2) Put original.reg ( registry file you downloaded) to your main AC directory (c:/games/AC for example), and new.reg to your second AC directory (c:/games/AC/AC2 for example)

Download the registry file from the list below that matches your main Ac directory. If there isn't one for your directory, you'll have to name it original.reg, as explained in step 3.

Main AC Directory (naming original.reg):
(Right click and choose "Save As" on the links provided for the registry files, and copy them into your main AC directory)
If AC is installed to C:/Program Files/Asheron's Call - pf_asheronscall.reg
C:/AC - ac.reg
C:/Games/AC - games_ac.reg
C:/Program Files/AC - pf_ac.reg

Second AC Directory (naming new.reg):
(Right click and choose "Save As" on the links provided for the registry files, and then copy them into your second AC directory)
C:/Program Files/Asheron's Call/AC2 - pf_asheronscall_ac2.reg
C:/AC2 - ac2.reg
C:/Games/AC2 - games_ac2.reg
C:/Program Files/AC2 - pf_ac2.reg

3) Edit original.reg so that the file paths point to your computers main AC directory. The file looks like this currently:

"InstallationDirectory"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Games\\Asheron's Call"
"Portal Dat"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Games\\Asheron's Call"

To edit the file, right click it and choose "Edit", or load up Notepad, and open the file. You must change the fourth and fifth lines (Sections you must change are in green), so that the file path points to your AC directory (Ie. Changing the fourth line to read: "InstallationDirectory"="C:\\games\\AC", and the fifth to read: "Portal Dat"=C\\games\\AC"). Make sure you use double backslashes when separating directories. Remember you need to edit both the fourth and fifth lines.

4) Edit new.reg as well, in the manner described above, except this time, have the InstallationDirectory and Portal Dat lines pointing to your second AC directory (Ie. "InstallationDirectory"="C:\\games\\AC\\AC2" and "Portal Dat=C:\\games\\AC\\AC2"). Remember to use double backslashes, and to edit both lines of the registry file.

I suggest making a shortcut to both original.reg and new.reg on your desktop, or in your Quicklaunch toolbar for Windows. This will let you easily run those two files later, which you will need to do for Dual Logging.

5) Make a copy of your current client.exe (I recommend saving it as client.oops)

6) Put the patched client.exe into both the AC and AC2 directories. Overwrite the existing client.exe file (This is why you should save a backup of client.exe) This replaces your standard client with an edited version of the client, which will allow you to Dual Log. Note that you will need to download a new client.exe from this site (or another site with it) every month after the monthly patch, or use Telaziz's Autopatcher.

If you've done all that and you're not *too* confused, congratulations - The hard part is over ;)

How To Dual Log

1) Run original.reg (Double click the file, or use a shortcut to it) and click "OK" on the prompt it gives you about changing your registry. It will then say "Information in blahblahblah has been successfully entered into the registry."
2) Load up the Asherons Call login page (I use this page: http://zone.msn.com/asheronscallxp/default2.asp?strlobbytype=wr)
3) Log into your primary AC account (Use the "Log In" text link at the top of the page, in the center), and log into the game
4) Alt+Tab out of AC, and close down the pop-up "Play" window
5) Run new.reg (Double click the file, or use a shortcut to it) and click "OK" on the prompts, same as step 1
6) Log into your second account (Use the "Welcome, ZoneName! Click here if this isn't you" link at the top of the page, in the center), and log into the game
7) Play ;)

A few things to note:
First, remember to load up original.reg at the beginning of every session. This resets your registry information to the usual settings, which lets you log in normally. If you forget to do this, you'll get error messages when trying to load up the second account.
Second, take all the steps slowly until you get used to it. It looks a lot more complicated than it actually is, but take it slow and careful until you get used to the process. Most of the emails I get asking for help are from people that just missed a simple little thing, and it only takes one little mistake for this not to work ;)

This is a compilation of Questions and Answers that I've gotten over the months. This should answer almost any question you've got about Dual Logging. If it doesn't, as always, feel free to email me (Link on the menu to your left)

Common Problems

General

1) What known problems are there with Dual Logging?

The two major ones that I've noticed are both related to your inventory. First of all, sometimes a trade window simply will *not* work for you. You won't see all items in it, and you will not be able to make the trade. To fix this, simply log out and back in. The second issue is sometimes items you hand to your other account (Account A to Accound B, or vice versa) won't appear in inventory. Again, to fix this, simply log out ;) (When in doubt, reboot! We all know this lesson from Windoze already, right?)

Another more minor one is that you hear sounds from both characters. Tip - Spellcasting beside both your characters at once is a *bad* thing ;) Other minor issues include rare unusual graphics glitches and increased processing power requried. Any reports you hear about cats turning pink are dirty dirty lies! Lies I tell you!

2) This patch doesnt work with Windowed Mode!

Windowed mode is not something I offer support for, as it's not something I use, or know enough about to troubleshoot for people. If you'd rather Dual Log while in Windowed mode, head on over to Wembly's. Some people love it, some hate it, some find it too unstable. Well worth giving a shot, if you'd rather not alt-tab all the time.

3) What's Decal / Sixth Sense / GEAR ??

This question has *nothing* to do with Dual Logging, but I've been asked it at least a few dozen times. Head on over to Third Party Paradise for answers about Decal/6th Sense. I've left a note containing information about Gear in the center lane of whatever highway is closest to you, so go check there if you need more info about how to use it.

4) Will Decal / Sixt Sense work with Dual Logging?

Some programs using Decal do, others dont. Sixth Sense does, although I've heard there are some issues with it. I do not offer support in any way for Decal, so ask around on their site for help there ;)

Error Messages

1) "You do not appear to have AC installed or you have a beta version of AC installed. Please exit this room and uninstall the beta version, if any. Then install AC from an officially released CD, and try again."

This is caused by incorrectly editing your registry files. Go back over them with a fine tooth comb - You've misspelled something, or missed a double slash, or something similarily small ;)

2) "Please make sure EBUEula.dll is in your path."

This is caused by forgetting to copy over some DLL's into your second directory. Open up your main AC directory, and check to see if you see any *.DLL files. If you don't, click on "View" -> "Folder Options" In that menu, there will be a choice that says something similar to "Show All Files" Make sure that is clicked. The DLL's should now appear, so copy em over into the second directory :)

3) "This installation of Asherons Call is missing certain critical files. Please reinstall Asherons Call before playing"

This means you've goofed on the order you're trying to run AC - You've either forgotten to switch registries, or you're trying to use your second one before your first ;) Close AC, load up original.reg. Log into your first account. Log in, alt-tab out, and close down the Play window. Load up new.reg, and log into your second account.

4) "You have been booted from Asheron's Call for Code of Conduct Violations!"

This happens when you try to log onto the same account and server twice, or when you've installed AC to a drive other than C:/ and attempted to Dual Log. Check to make sure you haven't logged into the same account twice, and that you've installed AC to C:/ drive.

Note: Before saying it doesn't work, check to see if your error is in this list above. Also check to make sure you've correctly edited your new.reg and original.reg, and that you've installed AC on drive C. Make sure you have 2 seperate accounts, and that you're actually logging into the first and then the second, and not trying to log into the same account twice =) And finally, ensure that you've downloaded this months patched client.exe(or used autopatcher on it).
