Ye Olde Site Map and Table of Contents

There are various "chapters" to the work that I do in the studio. I have indicated these headings on the front page of the site, you can see the connected sub-pages listed below and click freely between them.

Earth and Sky   The series began in 1975 and continues today. This is my primary vision and what I take to be the most serious aspect of my work. It has gone through many permutations.
Sub-areas underneath the major heading of Earth and Sky are Tree Portraits and Archangel Light. I have also done quite a bit of landscape and skyscape work. Those images can be seen on my encaustic website (see link on front page to brochure website),

     Tree Portraits
This series has been ongoing since the mid-80's. It is an extension of Earth and Sky. Richard commented that my landscapes were empty of any visible vegetation. I thought that was because the view was from 30,000 feet in the air. I have been working to get my feet onto the ground and trees, as a series, has been a good way to do that.

      Archangelic Light

Sharon invited me to a prayer healing service she attends and when I told Deacon Nelson from the 3rd Avenue Baptist Church in Hunter's Point that I had always wanted to paint Archangels but felt it was a bit over my head he said that God would never have put that desire into my heart and I had been appointed a mission to paint Archangels. He demanded to know if I was going to do it? I said, "Yes, I will."

    The Dark and the Light
You cannot paint form without light and dark. You cannot have all dark and you cannot have all light. Some people say that the world in which we live exists because of the balance held between the forces of dark and light and that if ever either would predominate, the world would cease to exist. It's an interesting notion when you consider the ideas of Western Christianity and their end-times predicitons of the triumph of the light and the end of the world. If light were to concour darkness, then the world would cease to exist. I have talked with Balanese mystics about this idea and they say that our place as humans is to hold a balance so that the world can continue to exist. (Another thought to consider while caught in traffic.)

 Cherry Blossoms
I took a break from miniature worlds to paint the cherry blossoms in bloom in Golden Gate Park.
An excursion into the park to see what the winter light is like.
A snapshot comparison between two pictures taken 1 and 1/2 hours apart showing the changes in highlights and shadows.
As the sun moves across the sky, hour by hour, the highlights and shadows change on a scene. When working outdoors, these changes affect what get's drawn and how. A photograph is static. The landscape, with the movement of the sun is ever changing in composition.
Not only does the light change hour by hour, but season by season there is more and less light available in the landscape. The comparison of winter and summer solstices is quite dramatic.

 Pastel Process
I photographed a pastel piece in process at various stages and then assembled the photos into an animated slide show and you can watch a piece being created on the screen. Pictures do not start out in a finished state. There is a lot of under painting that needs to be done.
Following are each of the panes from the pastel show with a short description of what was going on while I was working on that level of the picture

The Feng Shi Story   This page explains some of the things I take into consideration when orchestrating my mood and environment in order to create the kind of work I make. Meditation is part of it. Music is part of it. Interaction with friends is another part of it and Madeline has had an impact on the development of the miniature worlds idea

  • Link to Jacotte Collette. (A musician who has been very inspirational to me. She does work with hemisync processes that balance the functioning of the right and left brain. Quite a few things have happened in my work as I have experimented with the effects of her music on my working process. The environment has an effect on us. Our cities are grey concrete and field volumes of pure noise. No one thinks it matters that the environment is so unpleasant, but everything has an impact on the central nervous system and from there on the general health of the body. What would it be like if the streets of our cities were lined with trees, blooming flowers, fountains and birds? We could do this if we wanted. There is no reason why we have to live in a drab concrete industrial wasteland.)

First evolution of the idea into 3-dimensional collage stories
The Walls come down
Madeline and I have been sharing ideas back and forth. She responded to my 3-D stories by making portrait dioramas.
Madeline has been doing collage work for years. This page shows older work as a reference point for what she began to do with the portrait dioramas.
My background with 3-D collage takes a more fanciful turn based on the early fairy homes I built as a child and later taking the idea into making natural collage installations.
