Comparison of highlights and shadows from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

   
These two views contrast the changes in light over the course of two hours. The picture on the left was taken at 1:30, the picture on the right was taken at 3:00. Notice the darkening of the shadows in the background in the picture on the right. Notice also change in light on the large trunk next to the Rhododendron. The shading on the Rhododendron has also changed.

Pastels take more than one sitting to complete because of the light changes. An hour makes an enormous difference in the shadows and highlights. I usually stay on a site for two hours and get a lot of light into the piece because I use highlights from a two-hour span.

The Pastel pictures take from 4 to 6 hours to create.
