Please Note: AOL is rejecting many of the emails
from Roy. If you have not received the update it is not because he is ignoring
you. That is also the reason I have changed the email for this website to
asachitose@verizon.net
1. MEMORIAMS- It is with great sadness that I report that the following have passed on:
A. Otis Wilbon - Bankhead Maintenance Chitose 63/66 passed away on August 12. I did not know Otis very well but it
sure was a pleasure to see him and Catherine at our reunion in 2001. Condolences may be sent to his widow Catherine at
4735 S Pueblo Ave, Sierra Vista, AZ 85650.
B. Bob Brade - Comm Center Chitose 63/66 passed away on August 7. Bob has always been active with the group even
though he had not attended any of the reunions. Condolences may be sent to his widow Marcia at PO Box 105, Quinby,
VA 23423.
C. June Nordgren - Wife of Leonard Nordgren passed away on July 27. Leonard was at Chitose early 50’s and 64/67.
She was born in Sapporo in 1928 and came with Leonard to the USA in 1952. She really enjoyed Leonard’s assignment
back to Hokkaido in 1964 as the SAIC of the Army CIC office at Chit One. Condolences may be sent Leonard at 824
Mariners Point, Rodeo, CA 94572-2002.
D. Norman Leonhardt - Post Engineers Chitose- Norm was an old personal friend that I had just recently learned had
passed away several years ago. I had lost contact with Norm for a number of years. His wife Kazuko is also lost to us off
the roster.
2. Updates will now be sent as an attachment in PDF
format. I was having problems getting through to AOLaddresses. They treat me as a Spam producer. Some times I got through other times I didn’t. Sending it out in the
regular way with the update in the body of the message has resulted in a large number of rejections. I then sent the
update to AOL addresses as an attachment all went through except a few addresses that were no longer on AOL. This
update is also posted on the web site.

$50.00 deposit 3 months in advance which will make that July. A single room rate is $205.00. This takes place at the
Irish Village in Yarmouth, Massachusetts. The rate includes 3 full Breakfasts, I dinner meal off the menu and 1 Banquet

Whale Watch and Golf . We would like to know what you would be interested in while you are here. If enough people
are interested the trip will proceed. We will have a sign up sheet at our Reno Reunion but this will give you time to think
about what we have to offer. Any further questions can be directed to us by E-mail at
wnrstowell@aol.com or W & RStowell 1106 Wachusett Street, Jefferson, MA. 01522. Hoping to see you all Rosemarie and Warren. Note I have
mentioned to Warren that there has been some interest expressed in a trip to the Ft Devens area and he said it could
possibly be worked out.
/// Note from Phil :
Ft. Devens is now an indusrial park with a mixed use of heavy industries, small
businesses and low income housing. Hardly recognisable as the place we remember.
The old barracks are gone and the only buildings remaining are the permanent
structures. The new barracks that were built as well as the dependent
housing are now low income housing and the few remaining buildings are now
office space. A tour there would only be a drive thru.///
5.
ASA ANNUAL PICNIC- Plans are underway to again hold this event on Saturday 1 August. Since Blobs Park hasclosed the 2008 event was moved to the Ft Meade Club. Harry Dykes co hosted along with Jim Allis’s daughter. We
had a great turnout and the buffet was terrific. This annual affair is sponsored by the ASA Capital Area Alumni
Association which also sponsors mixers in the spring and fall. If you are not on their mailing list and wish to be added
contact Len Fischer, at PO Box 234, Occoquan, VA 22125-0234, of course a small contribution to the mail fund is
always welcome. When these arrangements are firmed up we will let you know.

Received the following from Ron Dakin:Cookie and I, over the years, have tried to attend as many reunions as possible, after we learned of the Chitose Reunion
Group. Unfortunately, due mainly to Cookie's health problems, we have been unable to attend the recent reunions. But
we enjoyed the friends we met at those reunions we have attended. Cookie is currently receiving chemo once every six
months, and because she has Lymphoma, which severely reduces her ability to fight off various bacteria, we are unable
to fly. Perhaps next year, when the reunion is is Mass, where we can drive to, we will be able to attend. I keep in contact
with many of those who served with me during my time in Chitose, Jan. 53 to December 56 (48 months) as well as those
whose friendship I found at the reunions we attended. I would just like to tell those at the reunion in Reno, that Cookie
and I are thinking of you, and hope you have a great time. We will never forget the friends we have had the pleasure of
meeting in the past
7. Received the following from Dave Waldman
:Need help to confirm that SGT Charles Mac Lee RA 12846961 was at Phu Bai with the 8th RRS in 1968 to verify a VA
claim. He also served at Ft Bliss as an MP. If you can help, please contact Chaplain Wes Geary at
wbgeary@excite.comASA Lives because We Care.
8. Received the following from Malcolm Oglesby
:I was fooling around with Google maps and Google Earth last week, and discovered that, unlike virtually every other
military in the world, the Japanese military bases are fully visible in Google Earth (satellite view on Google maps).
What we knew as Kuma Station is now Kiga station. Many of the buildings are just as I remember them while there in
65-67: The MP shack, dispensary, base HQ, barracks, NCO club, what became the EM club, and the gym. I thought the
gang would be interested in seeing our old haunt from the aerial viewpoint; please feel free to include this in your next
update.
9. HELP WANTED
- As most of you know there is more to our organization than just having reunions. Of coursemost of the functions have a direct bearing to the success of the reunions. All of these functions require a staff of
volunteers to support all the activities of our group. Some of these volunteers to include our wives are very visible at the
reunion, others provide valuable support, sort of in the
background, to keep our group functioning. The following
are
positions as soon as feasibly possible. Please do not follow that old army axiom never volunteer as the old recruiting
posters used to say we need you.
A
. As most of you know our Historian Dave Bontly passed away in July. The fruits of Dave’s labor were very visibleand enjoyed by all our attendees, The photo albums require constant updating as does our library of the old post
newspapers the Confidential and the Courier. We have about 400 pounds of memorabilia in 3 footlockers and a couple
of cardboard boxes. It would probably help to have several assistants to keep track of the various albums and get
pictures in the right books. We have a lot of pictures that we do not even know what time frame they belong with.
B.
News Letter Editor- Bill Reich our current news letter picked this function up on a temporary position after ChrisChristian passed away in 2005. Bill no longer feels up to this position and would like a replacement. He will work with
who ever volunteers to take over until they are comfortable with the job. Our Newsletter and homepage handled by Phil
Peters are right up there with the actual reunions in importance. Many of our people are unable to attend reunions for
one reason or another and this is there primary contact with the group. I know we have many talented people out there
who could handle this function, in fact we have several past editors of the Courier/Confidential publications. This is a job
that in fact would require an editor and a couple of co editors.
Come on guys lets hear from you

The following was submitted
by David Shaner
As a dependent, I lived in Chitose 1 for 6 years (1957 to 1964). I returned to Chitose, accompanied by my wife, this past May with friends from the ASA Chitose association. This was the first time I had seen the place where I had grown up, since 1964. Needless to say the memories started pouring out of the hidden recesses of my mind and literally burst out of me in many ways. Of course, the city and camps had changed in so many ways that most of what I remembered was gone and would remain only a memory. But those things that remained made my trip there a very wonderful experience.
I moved to Chitose from Tokyo in 1957, and our first year
we lived off camp, in a converted duplex about 1/2 a mile away from Chitose 1
and right next to the Chitose river. I was shocked, overwhelmed and exceedingly
delighted to discover that that house still stood and, indeed was inhabited. It
had been converted back to a duplex but there it stood. Remarkably enough, was
the fact, that in spite of all the changes, I was able to walk from the Airport
Hotel directly to that house, as if it were yesterday.
My six days in
Chitose were equally filled with wonder and discovery of those sites I
remembered so well, that were still around. I was even able to climb Mt.
Tarumae, with my wife, which I last climbed in 1963 as a 16 year old. The 20
members of the association who traveled with us were wonderful and truly made
the trip a great one. I fondly remember them all. Sheila McCann, always ready to
get us to and from everywhere, she was like a special aunt; Dick and Mary Ott,
our special newspaper deliverers; everyone touching our lives in special ways.
Our Japanese hosts were also wonderful, especially Ben Saka, who I know is in
all of our prayers. So many of them Knew my father and could tell me stories of
their relationships. The Chitose reunion trip and the stay in Tokyo have truly
been one of the most wonderful experiences in my life. As a result, I have been
in contact and even had dinner with several “Chitose Brats” and we all agree to
continue to communicate and meet and to try to find all the Chitose Brats. Our
plans are to develop a web site and eventually, become part of the ASA Chitose
organization. We would love to have all ASA Chitose members provide us with
information on former Chitose Brats through their parents. Please feel free to
contact me at shanerdmshanerdm@yahoo.com with any
information.
