Eraser Art

Making handcut stamps has become one of the joys of letterboxing for us. We began using commercially made stamps, and we also have had a couple of letterbox stamps made-to-order from our own design, but most of our stamps have been carved into vinyl erasers. We originally used Mars Staedtler "Magic Rubs" or Helix "Jumbo Professionals." Recently we were given several large pieces of Staedtler "Master Carve" by our friend Trish in Rhode Island, and it has been a revelation! We highly recommend this product. We draw the picture onto the eraser in marker and then carve the image using 15- and 11-blade surgical scalpels and a Speedball Linoleum carver. Originally attracted by the hiking and the orienteering aspects of letterboxing, we've found that making and collecting stamp images is also quite addicting and fun. We don't feel that people should let worries about making their own stamps stop them from enjoying letterboxing, however. Some of our favorite letterboxes contain commercially made stamps. Have fun!
